Solar-powered bus shelter comes up in Kolkata

In a first of its kind, the state government has set up a solar-powered bus shelter in the city in order to highlight the efficiency and practical application of solar energy.

Situated opposite the Kolkata Doordarshan Kendra, the bus shelter is already an attraction for local people and passerby. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), along with a city-based NGO, 'FREED' have come up with the initiative, which would produce 547 kW of electricity per year.
According to an environment expert, this would save three ton of coal per year resulting in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions up to 4.5 ton of carbon dioxide.

The project would create substantial environmental benefits by reducing of dependence on fossil fuel. Apart from the environmental aspect, the architecture of the bus shelter is designed with creative usage of heritage folk artisan of Bengal to promote the Khadi handicrafts. This would also add to the sustainable livelihood and markets for such handicrafts.
“If successful this would be implemented in the entire city. This is a new initiative and I think Kolkata would be a pioneer in using such green option,” Said Mr Arup Biswas state Housing and Youth Welfare minister.
