The significance of the Bhutan trip of West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee can be best fathomed from the importance attached to it by the Honourable Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.

Apart from the scheduled meeting on 5 October at the Parliament House of Bhutan, the Prime Minister was to meet the CM only during the dinner hosted by Hon. PM on 7 October. However, that was not the case.

Breaking protocol, Tshering Tobgay met Mamata Banerjee on four occasions, even driving her to the hotel personally last evening. He called on the Chief Minister at her hotel on the evening of 5 October, then again during a high tea session at the Indian Embassy.

However, the PM personally driving the CM to her hotel was clearly the high-point of the trip.

Mr Tobgay said, “The simplicity of the Chief Minister is well known in Bhutan. Even I have ridden on bicycles when I was Opposition.”

WB CM wrote on her FB page: “Honourable Prime Minister of Bhutan is leading the country and also leading the heart with the blessings of His Majesty. Bhutan India friendship is an envy for the world and it will only grow stronger in the days to come. May God bless the two countries.”
