West Bengal Government observes Vivek Chetana Utsav across the State

Like every year, the Youth Affairs Department, in association with Ramakrishna Math and Mission, is organising the Vivek Chetana Utsav from January 10-12, 2016, to mark the 153rd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Brainchild of Mamata Banerjee, the festival was conceived after Trinamool came to power in 2011.

Celebrations would be held all over the State – in 341 blocks, 121 municipalities, six municipal corporations, including in the 144 wards of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, GTA and in all the district capitals.

Among the activities would be ceremonial processions, exhibitions on the life and works of Swami Vivekananda, discussions on the character-building of students and the youth, quizzes on Swami Vivekananda, debates, exhibition football matches, sit-and-draw competitions, essay-writing competitions, and other cultural competitions and programmes.

The State Government wishes for a successful Vivek Chetana Utsav, through the cooperation of all stakeholders.

WB CM announces financial assistance to Ramakrishna Mission to promote value education

West Bengal government on Friday offered financial assistance of Rs 5 crore to Ramakrishna Mission to promote value education.

Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee handed over a cheque to Swami Suhitanandaji on Friday and said it would be used for constructing the replica of the building at Chicago which had hosted the World Parliament on Religion where Swami Vivekananda delivered his historic address over a hundred years ago on this day.

She said her government was trying to promote the works of Swami Vivekananda and other great men as their teachings were immortal.

“It is a duty to support such organisation working on Ramakrishna and Vivekananda,” she said.

WB CM had handed over the building where Sister Nivedita had died at Darjeeling and helped in its restoration. She had also offered Rs.1.5 crore for publication of Vedas.

The state government had offered 5 acres at Rajarhat township in the fringes of the city for the institute.

Conservation of Kolkata’s heritage – KMC’s achievements

Kolkata Municipal Corporation led by Trinamool Congress is committed towards conservation and maintenance of Kolkata’s heritage.

With this goal in mind, the Corporation under several initiatives like acquiring the residence of Sister Nivedita or rejuvenation of Sarat Sadan.

 

Conservation and rejuvenation of Kolkata’s heritage

  • Kolkata Municipal Corporation has acquired the residence of Sister Nivedita which has been handed over to Ramakrishna Mission for proper care and maintenance
  • The house adjacent to Swami Vivekanada’s house has been acquired for the same reason

 Conservation of theatres

  • Rejuvenation and modernisation of Mohit Mancha, Star Theatre and Sarat Sadan have been completed
  • Kolkata Municipal Corporation has acquired Uttam Mancha which has also been modernised

We must preserve the cultural heritage of Bengal: WB CM

West Bengal Chief Minister inaugurated a slew of projects at Nimtala Ghat crematorium, which included electric chullis and two environment-friendly wooden chullis. She also inaugurated the renovated memorial for Rabindranath Tagore at Nimtala Ghat and a memorial for Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa at Kashipur Ghat.

 Highlights of her speech on the occasion:

  • Several years passed since independence. No one ever thought of renovating the place where last rites of Ramakrishna was held.
  • We took over Roy Villa in the Hills where she breathed her last. We handed over to the Ramakrishna Mission. It is a heritage.
  • We will not allow any insult to the culture of Bengal. We will maintain the heritage.
  • We asked Rabindra Bharati University to set up another campus so that we could renovate Jorasanko museum.
  • Kazi Nazrul Islam was ignored in West Bengal. He was an iconic poet. We named a university after him.
  • We set up Nazrul Tirtha, Rabindra Tirtha. We are setting up a Centre of Excellence named after Swami Vivekananda.
  • We are building Dhano Dhanye stadium, named after the patriotic song penned by Dwijendralal Roy.
  • Religion does not teach discrimination. Sadbhavana means Sarva Dharma Samannyay.
  • We have built a new temple of Kapil Muni at Gangasagar. We are building a big Gateway to Gangasagar. The priest at Kapil Muni Ashram said the gateway will be called Sarva Dharma Sambhava.
  • No matter how much you abuse me, I will keep working for the people.
  • It is our duty to preserve the spot where Rabindranath Tagore was cremated.
  • There were only 4 electric chullis in Nimtala Ghat. Now there are 12.
  • Today is a holy day. People will take holy dip at Gangasagar from tonight. Lakhs of pilgrims come here for the occasion.
  • We have made arrangements for the pilgrims visiting Gangasagar. We withdrew tax that they had to pay for visiting Gangasagar.
  • Bengal is the only State where we have not levied water tax.
  • CREDAI has given Rs 2.5 crore for development work under CSR. I thank them for the support.
  • We beautified Ganga ghats. We beautified Millennium Park. Like London, Kolkata Eye is coming up soon.
  • We will develop Nimtala Ghat like other ghats in Kolkata.
  • Ramakrishna Mission, Bharat Sevasram Sangha work for all. We believe in harmony of all religions.
  • United we stand, divided we fall. We respect all religions. Ramakrishna Paramhansa said Joto mot, toto poth. We must follow his ideals.

 

Swami Vivekananda’s thoughts still relevant today: Mamata Banerjee

To commemorate the 153rd birthday of Swami Vivekananda in a befitting manner, a 3­day “Vivek Chetna Utsav” is being celebrated all over the state.

On the first day of the programme the State Government observed “Khel Dibas”, to promote excellence in sports and games among our youth along the ideals of Swami ji.

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee paid homage to the great icon on social media as well. On Sunday evening she tweeted that January 12, the 153rd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda has been declared State Government holiday.

Mamata Banerjee also tweeted that Trinamool will celebrate occasion in every block. The newly formed Jai Hind Bahini has taken up initiatives like Prabhat Pheri, seminars, debates, cultural programmes etc. throughout the State.
