No other govt supports theatre world like Bengal: Bratya Basu

The week-long National Theatre Festival beginning this week will bring names like Naseeruddin Shah, Saurabh Shukla and Sharman Joshi on stage with their latest productions.

Organised by Minerva Theatre and Minerva Natyasanskriti Charchakendra, the festival will be kicked off this Thursday with ‘Choumatha’ of young Bengali theatre director Anirban Bhattacharya.

Funded by the state government, the festival will be held at Minerva Theatre and Rabindra Sadan. Hon. Minister for Women and Child Development, Dr Sashi Panja will be present during the inaugural ceremony.

Festival chairman and state tourism minister Bratya Basu will present his production ‘Mumbai Nights’ on Sunday. He said that no other government in the country supports and promotes theatre world like West Bengal.

The closing day on December 2 will have veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah presenting his satirical play ‘Gadh-ha Aur Gadd-ha’ (Donkey and hole) based on Urdu writer Krishan Chander’s works.

Kolkata to brighten up for Durga Puja, buses to ply all night

West Bengal Tourism department and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) have joined hands to decorate the city with lights before Durga Puja.

All entry-exit points to the city would be decorated with light gates and important buildings and road crossings would be decorated with chain lights.

According to tourism department guidelines, the illumination would be done from October 18 to October 26 for 12 hours starting from 5.30 pm.

It’s a unique initiative on the part of the Government and KMC. Illuminating the city is something new and exciting.

Decorative light gates would be put up temporarily at Second Hooghly Bridge and Howrah Bridge. Important road crossings that would be illuminated with decorative chain lights include Shyambazar, Dalhousie, Dorina, Park Street, Elliot Park, Rabindra Sadan, National Library, Belvedre, Hazra, Rashbehari Avenue, Gariahat flyover and the riverfront.

All important and landmark buildings of Kolkata too would be illuminated with chain lights during the festive days. These buildings would include government and heritage buildings that usually attract tourists round the year.

The State Transport department has also taken decision to run Govt buses all through the night during the Puja days. Conductors and drivers will work in two shifts- day and night, to ease the worries of the pandal hoppers.

West Bengal to celebrate International Literacy Day in a big way

The West Bengal Government is celebrating the International Literacy Day in a big way.

A procession is being taken out at 10:30 AM from the base-ground of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, Esplanande to Rabindra Sadan. The main function will be held at Rabindra Sadan, 12 Noon onward.

State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee will inaugurate the programme. West Bengal Science & Technology and Bio-technology Minister Rabiranjan Chatterjee and Mass Education and Library Service Minister Janab Abdul Karim Chowdhury will be present at the event.

The theme of International Literacy Day 2015 is Literacy and Sustainable Societies. Literacy is a key driver for sustainable development. Literacy skills are the prerequisite for the learning of a broader set of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, required for creating sustainable societies. At the same time, progress in areas of sustainable development, such as health and agriculture, serves as an enabling factor in the promotion of literacy and literate environments.

There is nothing we have not done to honour Nazrul: WB CM

West Bengal Government today celebrated the 116th birth anniversary of the Rebel Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam through a special cultural programme at Nazrul Mancha.

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee, who was the main speaker on the occasion, said that the State government has done everything to give a fitting tribute to Kazi Nazrul Islam.

“We have set up Nazrul Tirtha. We started a university named after him. We have named the first Greenfield Airport of India at Andal after Kazi Nazrul Islam. We have dedicated a chair to Nazrul Islam at Calcutta University,” she said.

“The words of Nazrul Islam had the power to influence the fight for independence. Nazrul, Rabindranath, Swami Vivekananda continue to inspire us. Kazi Nazrul Islam is a big pillar of our culture and our existence,” she added.

The State Government today gave away awards and recognition to various eminent stalwarts from fields of art and culture. These awards were given by the academies and councils under the I & C A Department. “I am honoured to be sharing the stage with so many eminent artists today,” remarked the Chief Minister.

Family members of the Rebel Poet performed on the occasion. Nazrul’s daughter-in-law Kalyani Kazi said, “We thank WB CM Mamata Di for the honour bestowed on my father in law. Mamata Di promised to give Nazrul Islam his due honour when she was Rail Minister. She delivered her promise.”

25 se Boishakh is like birthday of Bengal: WB CM

West Bengal Government today paid a fitting tribute to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of his 155th birthday through a cultural programme at Cathedral Road near Rabindra Sadan.

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the function. She said she felt like 25 se Boishakh is like the birthday of Bengal. Calling Rabindranath and Nazrul as the pillars on which Bengal survives, she said this day marks a new beginning.

During the past three years under the Trinamool Congress, West Bengal Government had made it a point to pay highest respect to the beacons of Bengali culture.

During the next fortnight, the Kabipaksha, May 10 to 25, 2015, regular programme will be held at Rabindra Sadan and the open air stage at the Nandan complex. An exhibition of paintings will be held at Gaganendra Pradarshanshala from May 9 to 15.

Bengal Govt observes World Autism Awareness Day

The Department of Women Development, Child Development and Social Welfare observed the World Autism Awareness Day today, 2 April, 2015 in a big way.

As a prelude to the event, a mammoth rally was held on 1 April from the Kolkata Press Club to the Metro Channel. More than 300 people from all walks of life joined the rally. State Minister for Women Development, Child Development and Social Welfare, Dr Sashi Panja inaugurated the rally.

Today, a huge event was organised to celebrate the World Autism Awareness Day by the Commmissionerate (Disabilities), a wing of the Women Development, Child Development and Social Welfare Department, at Rabindra Sadan, where Dr Panja was present. Eminent personalities who are working for the cause of specially-abled people was present on the occasion. Boys and girls, teachers, special educators from different institution took active parts in the programme.

Audio-visual display on different issues on autism was played at different points of the Rabindra Sadan complex throughout the day.

To create more awareness among the people on autism, a mobile van is crisscrossing the city distributing leaflets and playing recorded message on general awareness about autism.

We condemn the death of the Bangladeshi blogger: WB CM

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee condemned the death of the Bangaldeshi blogger Avijit Roy, who was killed at Dhaka a few days back.

“We strongly protest the sad death of the Bangladeshi blogger. You cannot stop the freedom of expression. It is a democratic right. I have no language of consolation for the bereaved family.We condemn those who did this act of killing,” the Chief Minister said.

She was speaking at  in her speech at Rabindra Sadan on the occasion of Paschim Banga Charu Kala Utsav.
