Women councilors script history in KMC

With 51 women councilors – 44% of its 114 members – Trinamool has created history.

Trinamool had nominated 64 women candidates for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation polls, 15 more than it was mandatory under the state election rules. Fifty one Trinamool nominees won on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “Forty-four percent of councilors elected to the new KMC board from Trinamool are women.”

While it remained a general trend among political parties to shift and change candidates based on the ward reservation patterns, Trinamool chose to break ranks by re-nominating seven women candidates in general category seats.

45% candidates of TMC in KMC Election are women

Trinamool Congress is the only political party which has acted for the empowerment of women in the country by offering more than 33% seats to women candidates.

In the forthcoming Municipal Election of the Kolkata Corporation, the party has given candidature to 66 women out of the total 144 wards, which stand at 45%.

The Women’s Reservation Bill, which is still pending in Parliament, proposes to amend the Constitution of India to reserve 33% of all seats in Lok Sabha, and in all State Legislative Assemblies for women.

12 out of the 34 newly-elected Trinamool MPs are women, which constitute about 35.2% of TMC MPs.

Trinamool Congress has the highest percentage of women MPs in the house, while the 16th Lok Sabha has only 65 women members which is around 11%.

Trinamool announces the candidate list for Kolkata Municipal Corporation Election 2015

Trinamool Congress today announced the candidate list for the forthcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation Election 2015.

There are 144 wards in the Kolkata Corporation. Out of the 144 candidates, there are 66 women candidates and 20 candidates belonging to minority communities. Sovan Chatterjee is the Mayoral candidate for Trinamool.
