Sukhendu Sekhar Roy makes a Zero Hour Mention on leak of sensitive Aadhaar data

FULL TRANSCRIPT

In the recent months, more than 130 million Aadhaar cards and its databases have been leaked on government websites. In the recent past, Wikileaks hinted that the CIA allegedly accessed sensitive biometric data from the Aadhaar database. So far, there have been no reports of any investigation into this matter.

Sir, The National ID becomes especially problematic when it is linked to external, non governmental databases such as mobile numbers, and used to share personal data with a mobile operator, given that governments, ID authorities do not necessarily have the wherewithal or capacity to monitor the security practices of third parties.

In such a situation, we strongly feel, the registration of Aadhaar card with everything – from mobile phones to bank accounts is problematic. In its recent verdict, the Supreme Court has ruled that the Right to Privacy is a fundamental right. To ensure that this right is protected, it is incumbent upon this government to enact certain legislations to checkmate the misuse and leakage of Aadhaar database. Otherwise, the privacy of the citizens of this country will be compromised; it is being compromised.

A new legislation must be enacted by the Parliament to protect the privacy of citizens and till such time linking of Aadhaar cards should not be carried out.

Thank you, Sir.
