Dr Santanu Sen speaks on the need for regulatory commission for corporate hospitals

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Good morning Sir, thank you for giving me this opportunity.

Sir, as you know that the assault on doctors across the country and specially the reason of this hooliganism is overbilling by the corporate hospitals and out-of-pocket expenditures. Specially it is being noticed that in many corporate hospitals; even after the death of patients the dead bodies are being detained until the rest of the bill is being paid which is leading to agitation, which is leading to hooliganism in several corporate hospitals.

Sir, my suggestion before this House is that in our state of West Bengal, Madam Mamata Banerjee being the Chief Minister and the Health Minister has started in Bengal a health regulation board, West Bengal Health Regulatory Commission, which specially  looks after all these types of events; the patients who are being deprived by the corporate hospitals, they get a forum to lodge their complaints regarding overbilling.

My suggestion is to create this type of a health regulatory commission which exists in our state of West Bengal. It should be made in each and every state to regulate on these corporate hospitals to control overbillings and out-of-pocket expenditures and extortion by the corporate hospitals.
