Paid news will not help the Opposition in winning: Trinamool Chairperson at Siliguri

While addressing a rally at Siliguri today, Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee slammed the BJP for trying to fuel separatist movements in North Bengal. She said that as long as she was alive, such conspiracies will never bear fruition. Ms. Banerjee also told the audience that BJP was an opportunist party that made an appearance only during elections and played divisive politics. She called for unity of Bengal and restoring the pride of the State at the Centre.

Excerpts from the Chief Minister`s speech:
In the last two and half years, we have worked for the people of North Bengal to the best of our ability. We promised to set up a Mini Secretariat in North Bengal. We delivered within one and half years. We have developed Gazaldoba as a tourist hub. Industrial estates are coming up in North Bengal. We do not want North Bengal to lag behind in development.

Some parties want to divide Bengal. We will never allow that. I will fight for the unity of Hills and plains till the last breath. Some politicians can only be seen during election season and indulge in divisive politics. CPI(M) is na ghar ka, na ghat ka. BJP wants to divide the State. Congress has no ideology. They are opportunists. Congress appeases Muslims. What have they done for minorities in all the years after independence?

We participate in Durga Puja, Eid, Christmas as well as Guru Parab. They cannot run Gujarat, and they want to win in Bengal. A person with the blood of innocents killed in riots on his hands can never become the PM. CPI(M)-Congress-BJP have formed a nexus to defeat us. They cannot defeat us with paid news in some sections of the media.

The Congress kept increasing the prices of fuel, fertilisers, cooking gas. Only we protested. Jangalmahal is smiling. Darjeeling is smiling. They are national models. MSME sector has grown by 105% in Bengal. In Gujarat the growth was only 50%. We have started many projects for the girls. Kanyashree scheme is one such scheme. Out of every 1000 children, Gujarat has infant mortality rate of 42. Bengal’s rate is 31.

We are fighting elections alone. But we are fighting with dignity, honour and honesty. We have a grand alliance with the people of Bengal. Congress and BJP formed a syndicate to break Andhra. We will not allow that in Bengal. We will build Trinamool Congress as a National party. The Opposition only gives gyan. When they were in power, they ruined the State.

I have held 54 administrative meetings in the districts in the last two and a half years. The Opposition never stepped out of Kolkata. TV channels won’t vote, people will. Paid news will not help the Opposition in the long run. Let the Opposition carry out its malicious propaganda. People trust us. I work for the people. They are my assets. I have struggled all my life for them. I do not seek any luxuries or financial assets. People are my assets.

CPI(M) distributed only 12000 land pattas in 2 years. We have distributed 2 lakh pattas in two and a half years. We have established 8 universities. How may did the Left set up in 34 years? Only two. The Centre is taking away a major part of our revenues. Yet we have not stopped any services. We have started Yuvashree scheme. One lakh youth can register their names in the employment bank. We have set up 5 new Police Commissionerates to improve law and order situation. 26 women’s police stations, 19 human rights courts, 80 fast-track courts have been set up.

The leader of the country should be acceptable to all. Gandhiji, Netaji, Maulana Azad, Ambedkar, Bhagat Singh – they are true leaders. Some claim to be leaders of Hindus. Some claim to be leaders of Muslims. But no one wants to lead India. Some parties are running marketing campaigns worth crores on Facebook. My page is managed by only one person.

We are clear about our policies. We cannot allow FDI in retail. That will kill the unorganised sector in India. Centre wanted to deprive North Bengal of drinking water and irrigation facilities by giving away Teesta water. I can never betray people. I cannot be intimated by blackmail tactics. Political killings have come down drastically in Bengal. No one gives us credit for that.

The Opposition has a plan to divide people on religious lines to get votes. Help me defeat them. We have to help Bengal get her due respect from the Centre. Trinamool Congress will decide the next Government at Centre.

I chant the Durgastotram during Durga Puja and recite the Quran during Eid. I visit Gurdwara during Guru Parab and go for the midnight Mass during Christmas. Every vote is precious. Vote for the unity of Bengal on 17th April. I wish you all Subho Nababorsho in advance. We initially thought we will win 35-36 seats. Now, people want us to win in all 42 seats.

She also raised the following slogans:

‘PM candidate’ is a fictional idea: Mamata Banerjee in her second interview to PTI

Trashing pre-poll surveys putting Narendra Modi ahead in the prime ministerial race, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today said the idea of a PM candidate is “fictional” as it is not backed by Constitution.

“The `PM candidate` is a fictional idea. There is no such thing in the Constitution,” she said, adding that in a parliamentary democracy, the people elect MPs who then select the PM.

In an exclusive interview to PTI, the West Bengal Chief Minister said, “Let them get a majority first. To those who are saying Namo, Namo, we are saying No-No, No-No,” she said, targeting Modi.

She expressed confidence that a federal front will form the next government because “people of India are `bahut` (very) wise.”

The federal front, she said, comprises political parties which are keen to fight corruption, dynasty rule and communalism, which both Congress and BJP have failed to do.

“Congress has lost all credibility, accountability and morality to rule. We cannot do away with a corrupt government and bring a party whose face symbolises communal rioting,” she said.

“On the counting day, you will see even if you add up the Congress and BJP seats, it will be below 273. This is the political reality,” Ms. Banerjee said.

Alleging that Congress and BJP have “formed a syndicate to sell India”, she said, “Congress is anti-people. They are increasing the prices of essential commodities – from fuel to fertilisers.”

Ms. Banerjee, who had earlier said BJP is not the alternative to Congress and Congress is not the alternative to BJP, now said “BJP and Congress are the same”.

Hitting out at Narendra Modi without naming him, Banerjee said, “The BJP has a person with blood of innocents killed in riots on his hands hoping to be the PM”.

Asked if Trinamool will support a BJP-led government minus Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister, Banerjee said, “There are too many ifs and buts in your question. Politics is not about ifs and buts. I have told you I am hopeful about the Federal Front.

Hills are our pride, will not allow division of Bengal: Trinamool Chairperson at Darjeeling

Sending out a strong message against bifurcation of the state, Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee today said Darjeeling is an integral part of it and blamed certain local parties in the Hills of trying to play divisive politics without bothering about the development of the hills. She even addressed the people in Nepali and Hindi.
She highlighted the work the West Bengal Government has done for Darjeeling district and accused the GTA of not spending any fund for the development of the people. She said she has always visited the Hills whenever the people were in distress. Didi also asked people to shun the politics of bandhs and violence. She asked the youth to come forward for the cause of development.
Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:
My dear brothers and sisters of the Hills, I welcome you all for coming today. Peace prevails in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong. There is a surge of development here. I want my people in the Hills to remain in peace. I will not allow any group to instigate violence. Do not live in fear. No one can harm you.
We are ready to make any sacrifices for the happiness of the brothers and sisters of the Hills. No other CM ever visited Darjeeling as many times as I have. I have a bond with the local people. Some people imposed Bandhs in the Hills, thus taking away the livelihood of people.
I wanted to nominate an unanimous candidate for Hills. The other parties did not agree. I wanted to nominate a local candidate from the Hills. I have not brought a candidate from Delhi. When people of Darjeeling were starving during Bandhs, I sent my ministers with ration for you.
We do not have double standards. What I say in the Hills, I reiterate in the plains. We are committed to developing Darjeeling as a tourism hub. We have developed Lamahata as a tourist destination. We have started Bhanu Bhakta Academy. We are opening colleges, ITIs and polytechnic colleges at several places in the district. We have allotted Rs 500 crore to solve the drinking water problem in the Hills.
They always said they do not want an outsider as candidate. Which “bhoomiputra” have they fielded? A man from Delhi. We have hosted official celebration of Netaji`s birth anniversary in the Hills this year. We have formed development boards for Tamangs and Lepchas. We have demanded Bharat Ratna for Tenzing Norgay.
We formed the GTA soon after coming to power. We have allotted funds to the GTA. Why have they not started any development work? Every department of WB Govt has cleared projects for Darjeeling. Why has GTA not implemented them?
How will the State run if the Hills and plains are pitted against each other? We work for all people. We do not make distinctions. The youth of the Hills are very talented. Development is a continuous process. It will bear fruits in time.
Some parties are exploiting the sentiments of local people in the name of statehood. They want to shut down everything. Common people will suffer and they will prosper. There can be no development at the cost of the interests of common people.
Bhaichung also hails from the Hills. He has represented India in football. Vote for joraphool. Vote for Bhaichung. Vote for Trinamool.
As Railway Minister, I did a lot to improve railway services here. When Darjeeling was struck by earthquake, I was the one who rushed to the Hills. Whenever the Hills were in distress, I have stood by my brothers and sisters here. BJP had an MP from Darjeeling for 5 years. What have they done for you?
The Hills are our pride. I will never allow Darjeeling to be separated. I will fight for honour of Bengal. The youth need to come forward for the development of Darjeeling. Every vote for joraphool will mean more development for the Hills. This symbol stands for progress. We have promised a special package for Darjeeling in our Manifesto.
Let there be free and fair elections. Vote fearlessly. Vote for peace. Thank you all. My Government is always with you. I will come back soon.
Raha gulshan toh joraphool Pahar mein khilenge. Raha zindagi, toh Dilli bhi jeetenge.

1000 days at a glance: Initiatives for Darjeeling

Restoring peace in the Hills and honouring the demand of an autonomous body for the region had been a priority for the West Bengal Government. Soon after coming to power, Ms. Mamata Banerjee formed the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) in July, 2011. The GTA Bill was passed in September, 2011 and notified in March, 2012.

West Bengal CM Ms. Mamata Banerjee has always maintained that Darjeeling is an integral part of West Bengal and the region needs development.

The Developmental Surge:

In June 2011, the State Higher Education Minister had submitted a proposal to the then Union Education Minister to set up an IIT or an IIM in Darjeeling “for the people of the hills”.

On October 10, 2011, Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee announced a slew of projects for the Hills to boost the tourism sector. She said, “Darjeeling will be Switzerland and everybody`s dreamland. The master plan for tourism development is underway, and once completed and implemented, the region will turn into Switzerland.”

“Under the project, from installing street lamps and signage on the roads, to sanitary development and garbage disposal, all will be done to make the city better. Eco-tourism policy for Darjeeling is ready. The funds have been sanctioned,” she added.

She unveiled six railway projects, including a modern printing press and basic training centre at the neighbouring hill town Kurseong; a filter manufacturing plant and a multi-functional complex building at Siliguri was also on the cards. A tourist information centre (TIC) will be set up in the picturesque Mall, the tourist hub of Darjeeling town, she announced.

An international research centre named after Rabindranath Tagore and a Nepali Academy named after poet Bhanubhakta will also come up at Kalimpong`s Mongpu. Electricity and drinking water would reach all schools in the next two years, she said, adding that two model schools would be set up at Kalimpong and Sokhiapokhri.

“In addition to the beautification of stations, tourist lodges will be renovated and upgraded. A trekking route will be created from Moniganj to Sandakphu. With private participation, four ropeways would also be installed,” she said.

A Tea Tourism festival and an Orange festival were also held at Darjeeling. Besides, a grant of Rs 28 crore for the construction of a parking lot and a fund of Rs 3 crore for building a stadium were also sanctioned. Air-conditioned buses will soon connect Darjeeling to various important centres.

The Chief Minister said that the state government would provide Rs 56 crore for developing drinking water facilities in the region and establish 100 primary and upper-primary schools. The government will also upgrade hospitals and health centres in the area, she informed.

Other Developmental Projects:

  • On May 15, 2013, the West Bengal Chief Minister inaugurated three IT hubs, one each at Kurseong and Kalimpong sub-divisions and one at Mirik. She also inaugurated a fair price medicine shop at the Darjeeling district hospital along with an auditorium at the Gorkha Ranga Manch Bhawan, and the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) Sabha office.
  • Thanks to the initiative of the Chief Minister, closed tea gardens have been reopened; the region got power plants, polytechnic colleges, new schools and modernized hospitals. A holistic initiative was taken by this government to bring development in Kurseong, Kalimpong and Darjeeling.
  • In July 2013, a high-level meeting was convened at the State Secretariat to discuss the scope of promotion of tea tourism in North Bengal, and especially in Darjeeling. Most of the tea estates in West Bengal are under private ownership. The land, which belongs to the state government, is leased out to private parties for tea cultivation.
  • Several new tourist spots such as Lamahata and Sandakphu have been developed to attract more tourists. The Chief Minister proposed developing 9th Mile as a tourist destination. Three new tourist destinations at Dalgaon, Bijonbari and Rimbik have been identified. Helipads, airports and other world class facilities will be made available to tourists from all over the world to encourage them to visit Darjeeling. The CM also announced that Rs 80 crore had been sanctioned for maintenance of the National Highway 55, connecting the Hills to the plains. She also said that two hydro-power projects will soon come up at Teesta and Rimbhi.
  • On September 3rd, the newly constituted Mayel Lyang Lepcha Development Board conferred the honorary title “King chum Daarmit” (Goddess of Fortune) on the Chief Minister at the Mela Ground in Kalimpong for playing the pivotal role in the formation of the Board.
  • The Government also handed over the house of Sister Nivedita to Ramakrishna Mission and it will be converted into an institute of culture and education.
  • The Government held the first ever celebration of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose`s birth anniversary outside the State capital at Darjeeling. She also announced the formation of Tamang development board.

Trinamool Chairperson calls for Poriborton in Jalpaiguri

Addressing a rally at Jalpaiguri Sports Complex, Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee asked the people of the district to bring in Poriborton during the Lok Sabha elections. She accused the Left of doing nothing for the district despite winning elections last time. Listing the achievements of the Government, she said Trinamool Congress led West Bengal Government has done more work in 34 months compared to the 34-year rule of the Left Front.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

I welcome all those who are present here.  We have met all the demands of the Jalpaiguri district. We have expedited the process of formation of the Circuit Bench of Calcutta High Court in Jalpaiguri. We are setting up industrial hubs in the district. We are developing Gazaldoba as a tourist hub and another hub at Banarhat. All these initiatives will generate employment. You could never expect these from the CPI(M) or the Congress. What has the CPI(M) done for the district despite winning in Panchayat election from here? They forgot about people after winning the polls.

This time we want Poriborton in Jalpaiguri too. We want change across North Bengal. People are the real judges. They will decide the winner of polls. Not media houses. I am ready to listen only to the plights of the common people.

We gave developed the infrastructure in education sector by setting up new institutions. Three multi super specialty hospitals are coming up in this district at Jalpaiguri, Falakata and Alipurduar. A Medical Hub is being set up at a cost of Rs 16 crores. We are also renovating Jalpaiguri district hospital. We have set up fair price medicine shops.

We are setting up ITIs in every block and polytechnic colleges in every sub-division. Schools are being upgraded. Sports complexes are being set up. Kisan Mandis are being set up. Jalpaiguri has immense tourism potential. Nature has abundantly blessed this region. We are trying to create the infrastructure. We have inaugurated Uttar Kanya, the branch Secretariat for North Bengal in this district.

The Centre is taking away all our money. The CPI(M) destroyed Bengal by incurring huge debts. They are responsible for the unemployment. They terrorised common people. Do not vote for them.

The Centre is not releasing funds for work. Why did the Congress and BJP not stop Left Front from incurring debts, when they were in power at Centre? The Centre has been taking away all our revenues. Congress is trying to stop the surge of development in the State. Do not vote for them.

A certain political party plays divisive politics and can be seen only during the election season. Do not give a single vote to BJP. They want to divide Bengal. I will never allow another partition. BJP has the stain of riots in its hands.

This is a fight for Bengal`s honour. This is the fight against the price rise and the FDI in retail. This is the fight against bad governance and rioters. While some media houses are non-partisan, certain sections have sold themselves to money power. We are not afraid of any blackmail and fear tactics. We never leave the side of the people.

First the Congress should give us funds and then ask for votes. We are the only party to speak for the people. We had left the ministerial posts to be by the side of people. There are still few people who have not sold their souls to money power. Our party is like that.

I agree Jalpaiguri is lagging behind. But we are working towards all round development here. Our candidate for Jalpaiguri, Bijoy Chandra Barman, is an academician. He is the former Registrar of Rabindra Bharati University. Our candidates will fight for our rights in Delhi.

We are giving the due respect to Adivasi culture. We have given recognition to Hindi, Urdu, Al Chiki, Punjabi. We have started a Rajbongshi Academy. We have set up an Urdu Academy, made reservations for minority community students. Our Government has given 10% quota to PTTI-parateachers in recruitment.

We have started Kanyashree scheme for girls. They will get scholarships to pursue education. We have given 2.5 lakh cycles to girl students. We have distributed 57 lakh scholarships to minority students. It is not possible to instantly undo the backlog of 34 years. We are trying.

We have given 2 lakh pattas in two and a half years. We believe that the rights of the forest should stay with the tribal people. We have taken up projects to boost tourism in Dooars. We have started tea tourism and home tourism. I urge you all not to let us down this time. I want the blessings of the people of this district. North Bengal was neglected earlier. We have started a new Department for you. I have visited North Bengal several times.

We are giving allowance to self-help group workers. We are building 500 marketing hubs. In MSME sector, we witnessed a growth of 105%. Gujarat only had 50% growth. Centre wanted to deprive people of North Bengal of drinking water by giving away Teesta water. The Opposition is carrying out malicious campaigns. But we have trust of the people.

I never support any wrongdoing. I always protest against what is wrong. Our hoardings are being removed. We cannot put posters. Our wall-graffiti is not allowed. How will we campaign? We are soft targets because we always stick to our principles. We do not want violence. We want peace. We do not support riots. We want progress. People of Hills and people of plains – everyone is equal for me.

Some people are saying that Gujarat is the model for India. In Gujarat the child mortality rate is 42% whereas in Bengal it is just 31%. We have set up 31 colleges in just two and a half years. Earlier there were only 38. We set up 8 new universities in Bengal. The Left, during the 34 year old rule, set up only 2. Today Bengal is number one in 100-days work scheme. Everyone is jealous of us.

Let me introduce to you your candidate Bijoy Ch Barman. There cannot be a better candidate for Jalapiguri. Trinamool will emerge as the third largest party after Lok Sabha polls. Vote for Trinamool on 17th April. Help us build a new India. Help us get Bengal her due from Centre.

Trinamool Chairperson urges people at Dinhata to shun the Left for development

Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee today talked about border enclaves and Teesta water-sharing during rally at Dinhata in Coochbehar district. She said that her government would take a view on the enclaves issue after ascertaining the wishes of the people residing in adversely possessed areas.

She urged people not to waste their votes by voting for CPI(M)-Congress-BJP. She highlighted the work done by her Government for Coochbehar district and asked people shower the party with blessings.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

I welcome all my brothers and sisters. I have also campaigned in Dinhata earlier in 2011. Back then, we were in alliance. Now we are fighting alone.

Opposition is trying to criticize us on different grounds. BJP talks about Chhitmahal and other divisive issues only during elections. Why were they silent during the past regime. Our Government has started a survey on Chhitmahal. We will do what the people in those areas want. We will not impose any decision on them. I know what the ground reality is. We have to annihilate Congress-BJP-CPI(M) politically here.

What has the Left done for Coochbehar in all these years?  When I commit to something, I put in hundred per cent effort. The Singibari-Adabari Bridge is being constructed. We have set up Panchanan Barma University. There are 15 colleges under it. Polytechnic college is coming up at Toofanganj. An engineering College is coming up at Horinchowra.

We have set up a Rajbongshi Academy. We have set up clusters for silk and tashar at different blocks of Coochbehar including Sitalkuchi. 50,000 man-days will be created by the Handloom Cluster in Dinhata-Toofanganj. We have cleared 132 primary schools and over 40 Madhyamik schools have been upgraded in Coochbehar district. Model schools are being set up in the area. There will be ITIs in every block and polytechnic colleges in every subdivision.

We have upgraded medical facilities at all sub-division hospitals. We have initiated the process of setting up one government and one private Medical College here. There will be 12 SNCUs in the district out of which 9 are already functioning. One fair price medicine shop is already functional. 17 out of 24 drinking water projects will be complete by May in Coochbehar. We are renovating Coochbehar Palace. It is a tourist attraction. Kisan Mandis are being set up in every block.

National Highways are under Central Govt. We have written multiple times to them to repair the roads. We are setting up a new airport in Coochbehar with a bigger runway. Coochbehar will now be connected to Kolkata, Guwahati, Sikkim via air. We have exempted taxes for air service providers.

As Railway Minister I have given several trains to North Bengal. After me, none of the Railway Ministers have done anything to improve the infrastructure here. We have given Rs 57 lakh scholarships to minority community students. We have fixed the salaries of several self-help group workers. We have given 2.5 lakh cycles to girl students. We have inducted 1.3 lakh civic police, home guards. 26 women`s police station, 19 human rights courts, 80 fast-track courts have been formed.

CPI(M) distributed only 12000 land pattas in 2009-10. We distributed 2 lakh pattas in two and a half years. We have set up 8 universities in two and half years. The Left set up only 2 in 34 years. For 66 years after Independence, Bengal had only 38 colleges. We set up 31 govt. colleges in two and half years. We have initiated reservations for OBCs and minorities. We increased infrastructure for that and did not touch General Category seats.

The Centre has deprived Bengal of funds. If we had the money, we could have done a lot more for the people. The Left incurred debts. We are now paying for their sins. The Centre is depriving Bengal so that the surge of development in the State comes to a halt. We have had to pay Rs 76000 crores to pay off debts incurred by the CPI(M). People will give a fitting reply though ballots to the Centre for the economic deprivation.

Botam tipben ekhane, Delhi te sorkar gorbo okhane.

Botam tipben ekhane, joraphul futbe okhane.

Botam tipben ekhane, Delhir banchanar jobab debo okhane.

Despite the financial crunch, not a single service has been stopped. We have started Nirmal Gram project. We have done better than many states in 100 days work. We have started Geetanjali Housing scheme. 500 marketing hubs are being set up. 5 lakh people will get employment. CPI(M)-BJP-Congress have formed a nexus.

We are the only political party who work for the people. We fight alone but with the head held high. If someone commits a mistake, they should be punished according to law. Certain sections of the media have been sold off. They are hyping any small little incident against me. We will not bow down to any pressure. Some media houses may have huge bank balance, but we have people with us.

We have set up a Mini Secretariat for the people of North Bengal. I have visited North Bengal at least 40-45 times. My predecessor used to come here for vacations. I will not allow Bengal to be divided. The State will be united, despite the conspiracies of some parties.

Teesta has dried up. There is acute drinking water problem. Yet, the Centre was giving away Teesta water. We have decided to recruit 10% PTTI-parateachers during teacher appointment. Coochbehar will emerge as a developed district in every sector.

The arrogance of the Centre has to be broken. They must be taught a lesson through ballots. We are not fighting alone. People are my allies. We do not have money power. We do not have any deals with media. We work honestly for the people. We will not use money power for buying votes. We will struggle for the sake of people. People are our assets. People are our inspiration.

Congress has sold off the nation. They have hiked the prices of everything from fertilizers to fuel. Do not vote for them. BJP may use media power to show a wave, but their divisive and communal agenda will not win. A person with stain of riots on his hands can never become the PM. BJP is acting unconstitutionally to divide Hindus and Muslims.

I thank the several groups and associations who have extended their support to us in the district. I celebrate Durga Puja, Eid, Christmas in the same spirit. We belong to this soil and will continue to serve the people here.  Our work is to transform Bangla into Biswa Bangla.

Botam tipben ekhane, Sarkar gorbo okhane.

1000 days at a glance: Conservation of forests

The West Bengal Government under the leadership of Ms. Mamata Banerjee has been instrumental in initiating projects to conserve the greenery in the State. During the tenure of the present government, two crore saplings have been planted per year and sowing has been done in 10,000 hectares. 78.6 lakh man-days have been spent on this work.

4386 Bon Suraksha Committees are working to conserve forests. Revenue collection from selling wood was only Rs 75.33 crore during 2010-11. During 2012-13, it increased to Rs 104.24 crore.

Voting for BJP means voting for division of Bengal: Trinamool Chairperson at Chopra

Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee today addressed a rally at Chopra in North Dinajpur district, where she campaigned in favour of party`s candidate for Darjeeling constituency, Bhaichung Bhutia. She asked people to shun the divisive politics of BJP. She vowed to fight for the unity of Bengal till her last breath.

Speaking before the Chairperson, Bhaichung Bhutia said he did not need a certificate of “bhoomiputra” from BJP candidate SS Ahluwalia. He has played for Bengal and India for 14 years and represented the region in true sense.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

I welcome all of you. Thank you for making it to the rally despite the heat.

I will be campaigning in Dinhata, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri tomorrow. I will go to the Hills on Sunday. A lot of developmental work is going on in these areas. Everyone must be united against the division of Bengal. I want both the people of the plains and the Hills to stay well. The BJP is trying to divide Bengal. Make sure they do not get a single seat from the state.

There are some leaders who make an appearance only during the polls. BJP-Congress-CPI(M) have a secret understanding. Voting for BJP means voting for division. Congress has sold off the country. CPI(M) is na ghar ka na ghat ka.

CPI(M) has not done anything for the Hills. We work for all. We do not discriminate. We respect every religious community. We have fulfilled the demands of the common people. We started Urdu, Hindi and Santhali schools to respect the demands of the minorities and tribal people. We are setting up ITIs, colleges, polytechnic colleges in these areas, at block and subdivision levels. We have introduced reservations for minorities and backward classes without touching the General seats.

Congress has increased the price of fuel, fertilizers, LPG and all essential commodities. We quit the UPA when they brought FDI in retail. We cannot betray the people. We chose to be beside common people and left the ministerial posts.

We have started Kanyashree project to encourage girls to pursue higher education. We gave land pattas, Kisan Credit Cards, scholarships to the needy. We are setting up 500 marketing hubs. We are upgrading facilities at North Bengal Medical College.

The Centre is taking away all the money we are earning. The Left Front Government incurred debts and we are paying for them. Despite the financial crunch, we are giving all services to the people. From self-help groups to para-teachers, we are securing the livelihood of everybody. We have given many jobs in civic police force. We have started police stations for women. We have started human rights courts, fast-track courts.

We will demand our right from Delhi. We need show our strength to Delhi through our ballots.

Hum ladai karte hai, toh ho jate hai badnam. Woh qatal bhi karde, toh charcha nahi hota hai.

This election is to uphold our rights. This election is to challenge Delhi. This election is to counter those who want to divide Bengal. CPI(M)-Congress-BJP are one and the same. Voting for one means voting for the other.

We are not fighting alone. People are with us. We have your support. The youth are the future of our country. They have to come forward to build a better nation. From women to farmers, we have the support of all.

BJP should understand people do not elect the PM. They elect MPs, who then select the PM. One man is dreaming of becoming the PM. He should first get a majority in Lok Sabha. Nobody has the right to insult the people of Bengal. Those who have blood of riots on their hands can never become the leader of the nation.

We do not want riots or destruction. We want peace. We do not want violence. We want progress. Let us live in peace. Let us stay united. Vote for peace, progress and development on 17th April. Vote for Trinamool. Vote for joraphool.

We do not strike deals with media houses, we work for people: Didi at Islampur

Addressing a rally at Islampur in North Dinajpur district earlier today, the Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee launched an attack on the BJP for trying to divide the state. She said that the party is communal and has stain of riots on its hands. She said that people with a history of riots can never become the Prime Minister.

Slamming the Central Government, she said that voting for Congress essentially means voting for the CPI(M). Listing the development initiatives taken by the West Bengal Government in the last three years, she urged people to shower their blessings on Trinamool.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

I thank you all for your presence. Thank you for waiting in the sun despite the heat. I have been visiting all the districts throughout the year. I held administrative meetings in North Dinajpur, something nobody has done in the past. I have travelled to North Bengal more than 40 times. I know these areas well.

The Congress-BJP-CPI(M) have a secret understanding. Trinamool Congress is opposed to CPI(M). I was with Congress. In 1998 we formed Trinamool Congress because the state Congress sold itself to CPI(M). To us, this is the fight for our motherland, our soil.

Nobody believed that CPI(M) could be defeated. We achieved that in 2011. Trinamool Congress will never bow down to anybody except the people. We protested repeatedly against price rise. North Dinajpur is a jute hub. We also protested when UPA made policies affecting the jute industry. We left UPA because they went ahead with FDI in retail. We are against policies that hurt common people.

There has been a rise in the prices of petrol, diesel, LPG, fertilizers and all essential commodities. But in Bengal we have lowered the cost of electricity. We instituted Kanyashree for education of girls. We started Yuvashree programme for the unemployed youth.

We are paying for the incurred by CPI(M) Government. The Centre is taking away all our money. We could have done a lot of work for the people with the money. They are not even releasing funds for the State.

Whenever there is an election, the BJP starts divisive politics on religious lines. Congress tries to woo the Muslims. But Trinamool works for everyone irrespective of the caste or creed. We are there for the people throughout the year. We have started schools with Urdu and Al Chiki as medium of instruction. We have created reservation for the minority community.

We have done a lot of work in every sector, from education  to setting up of fast track courts, women`s police stations, multi super specialty hospitals and model schools. We gave 57 lakh scholarships to minority students. We created more universities and colleges. An industrial estate is coming up at Islampur. Raiganj will get a campus of the North Bengal University. We have already set up 8 universities.

We will not tolerate any insult to Bengal. We will fight for the people. We don’t have money power. We cannot strike deals with media houses for paid news. We can only work for people. We have started Yuvashree scheme. Unemployed youths can register their names in Employment Bank. We are giving rice at Rs 2 per kilo to 3.2 crore people in the State.

India is a Parliamentary democracy. Elections are not held for the Prime Minister`s post. MPs select the PM. Some people are dreaming of becoming the PM. They should first get a majority. There is only one party in India that cares for the people – Trinamool. We do not make false promises. Trinamool has courage to fight for people. We do not strike secret deals in the dead of night.

I bow before you with folded hands. Shower your blessings on me. I will continue to work for people. I can give up everything in life. But I will never betray the trust of people. Voting for BJP means voting for riots. Congress has sold off the country. CPI(M) is na ghar ka na ghat ka.

Tyaag ka naam hai Hindu,

Imaan ka naam hai Musalman,

Prem ka naam hai Isaai,

Sikh ka naam hai balidaan

Roshni chand se hota hai, sitaron se nahi. Mohabbat ek se hota hai, hazaron se nahi. If you vote for the Opposition, they will divide Bengal, sell off the nation. Please do not commit the mistake. We do not believe in the politics of violence. If we are insulted people will give a reply through votes. People will form an alliance to vote for Trinamool.

I belong to a modest family, we are a poor party, that is why everybody targets us. We do not have money to hire TV channels for our publicity. What we can do is come to you with folded hands and ask for your support.

Raha gulshan toh joraphool khilenge. Raha zindagi, toh Dilli bhi jeetenge.
