Trinamool will not leave an inch to any Opposition nominee: Didi at Murshidabad

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee on Sunday stated that it is Bengal which will show the path of India`s future and stated that Bengal will remain steadfast in its approach and not beg in front of Delhi.

“Bengal is the future of India. We will never beg infront of Delhi. Let us change Delhi so that we do not have to beg in front of the BJP, the Congress or the left. If we have to bow our head we will do this in front of the people,” Ms. Mamata Banerjee said at a rally in Murshidabad.

The West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee stated that she will work for the people of Bengal till she is alive and they were her brothers.

“Till the time I am alive I will work for you. You are my family. I personally do not have any family. They are continuing with their political conspiracy and they are not able to fight me politically and as long as I am alive I will live with my head high,” Ms. Banerjee said.

She asked the people to drive out the Congress-BJP-CPI-M syndicate from the soil of Jangipur and added that the farmers, labourers and women were Trinamool`s strength.

Mamata Di urged the people to vote for Trinamool, “Farmers, labourers, students and women are the strength of TMC. It is our duty that we must blank the Congress, the BJP, the CPI-M from the soil of Jangipur. It is the soil of Mother Bengal which will win and keeping these things in mind will you lend support to your Didi? Do you like me?” she asked them and received an affirmative yes from the supporters in the form of a thunderous applause.

“Congress, CPI(M) and BJP play games to cut votes in various constituencies in order to ensure victory of their candidates as per their strength there. But this will not happen this time,” she said. Claiming that Congress “only makes false promises”, she asserted that “Congress will get a big zero.” “The Centre is taking away one lakh crore rupees from the state. Had this not happened, we could have ensured 20 lakh jobs for the youth of the state,” she added.

Trinamool questions ED`s hyper-activity in chit-fund probe before elections

Trinamool National Spokespersons Amit Mitra and Derek O`Brien today addressed a press conference at Trinamool Bhavan where they raised questions over the sudden flurry of activity by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding the Saradha scam, just two days before the polls.

Amit Mitra, who is also the Finance and Industry Minister of West Bengal, posed several questions before the media regarding the selective actions taken by the CBI and ED in various cases of financial irregularities. He also complained that the Central Government was delaying the Presidential assent for the anti chit fund Bill passed by the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

ED, CBI being used to serve political purposes

Amit Mitra began by quoting Dr Gopal Krishna Gandhi, former Governor of West Bengal, who at a recent event had called the CBI a “dirty tricks department” and the Government “machete”. He also said CBI engages in selective leaks of facts. Dr Mitra added that the ED was an agency under the direct control of Finance Ministry and was being used for political motives by P Chidambaram, who has only 26 days left in his tenure as the Finance Minister.

“Where was ED when Sudipta Sen was arrested from Kashmir? Why are they raising the issue during polls?” asked Dr Mitra. He also raised the issue of Sudipta Sen`s letter to the CBI where he had named Nalini Chidambaram.

While answering a question about CBI investigation in Saradha scam, the Finance Minister said, “The SIT is conducting investigations. SS Commission is doing its job. Why is there a need for CBI probe? The CBI Director himself says the agency is like a caged parrot. How can their probe be impartial?”

Amit Mitra posed four questions to the ED

1. Senior Advocates are usually barred from meeting clients directly. Why did the lady lawyer make an exception in the case of Sudipta Sen? Who was the solicitor? Why were conventions of the legal profession ignored in this `special` matter?

2. One Congress Minister`s lawyer-wife draws up an agreement to get Rs 42 crore in capital for a former Congress Minister`s wife for a dubious business project. What was the lady lawyer`s interest in the venture? Why was she soliciting capital and investment from Sudipta Sen, almost in the manner of an investment banker?

3. The lady lawyer, wife of a powerful minister, allegedly charged Rs 1 crore to draft an agreement other lawyers could have done for a much smaller sum. Why was she paid such a generous fee? What was the quid pro quo?

4. On May 14, 2012, the Parliament debated the involvement of P Chidambaram`s son in Aircel-Maxis deal. Who holds 94% stake in Ausbridge Holdings? Who benefitted from Aircel-Maxis deal? Has ED investigated this? Why are they raking up Saradha issue two days before the elections?

Amit Mitra slams Rahul Gandhi`s `ignorance`

Rahul Gandhi is immature and inexperienced, Amit Mitra said. “The SC has issued notice to the Centre on chit funds. Why is Rahul Gandhi silent on that?” he demanded to know. Is Rahul Gandhi ignorant about the formation of Shyamal Sen commission, wondered the WB Finance Minister. Rahul Gandhi does not make constructive criticism. He is either ignorant or politically motivated, he remarked.

WB Government is compensating duped investors

“When did Sanchayita chit fund scam happen? How many people got money back then?” asked Amit Mitra. He said that West Bengal is the only state in India where the Mamata Banerjee led Government formed a commission to return money to 17 lakh duped investors.

“What actions have been taken by Assam, Jharkhand, Bihar governments regarding chit funds?” he demanded to know. WB Finance Ministry allotted Rs 165 crores to return money to those duped by chit funds. The Commission has carried out e-auction of the properties of Sudipta Sen for transparency, Dr Mitra added.

Centre`s silence over West Bengal`s Bill on combating chit funds

AMit Mitra said that States need more power to deal with chit funds. He added that a A holistic, federal solution is needed for combating chit funds.

“In 2009, Govt of India brought a Bill against chit funds with severe flaws. It was returned by the President. The Bill against chit funds prepared by the WB Govt was crisp and was very strong. But Centre had problems with it. We have sent a second, amended Bill to the MHA. They have not yet reverted” said Dr Mitra.

“I have written to Shinde ji over the `deafening silence` of the Govt of India regarding anti chit fund Bill of WB. I have written that the Govt of India is solely responsible for the delay in the passage of the Bill. We genuinely wanted to pass the anti chit fund Bill for the sake of the people. The Centre sat over it” he added.

“If indeed an investigation is needed, it must start with page no. 10 of Sudipta Sen`s letter to CBI”, quipped Amit Mitra as his concluding remark.

Congress MPs forget the people of Maldah after elections and enjoy Dilli ka laddoo: Didi at Englishbazar

Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee today urged the people of Maldah to bring about poriborton in the district. She said that Congress has let the people of Maldah down. She also said that the Congress and CPI(M) had an understanding; while the Left helps Congress win Lok Sabha elections, the latter returns the favour during Vidhan Sabha elections.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

I welcome you all who are present here. You have been waiting for long for this meeting. I wish you all Subho Noboborsho. This year the Lok Sabha election is of utmost importance. You will be voting to elect a government at the Centre. Congress has been winning from Maldah in successive elections. But they have not done anything for the district. I have immense respect for Barkat Da. He has done a lot for the people here. Not his successors.

In 2011 Assembly Elections, we had a coalition with Congress. We helped them win in the seats they were fighting in. But the Congress betrayed us. That day I decided to fight alone and take revenge of this betrayal through ballots.

I have rushed to Maldah and Murshidabad whenever people have been in distress. Where were the local Congress leaders then? We have witnessed the reign of terror under the Left when people were tortured and killed. I will never forget the horrors in Maldah. I have visited these areas.

In the past we have allied with Congress and NDA. This time we are fighting alone. In the 2011 elections, had it not been Trinamool Congress, the Left could not have been defeated. We formed Trinamool Congress in 1998. Congress would never have been able to bring a change. Congress and Left are together. In Lok Sabha elections, Left helps Congress win. In Vidhan Sabha, Congress returns the favour.

Congress leaders are criticizing us. They have been MPs here for quite some time. They get elected, forget the people, go to Delhi and enjoy Dilli ka laddoo and forget Malda`s aam and aamsotto. Whenever the election comes, they come back to their areas and say that all the developmental work has been done by them.

Why are the Congress leaders silent on the financial deprivation by Centre for the last three years? Left incurred debts during their rule and now Centre is taking away all our money. The money taken away could have been utilized to provide employment to 20 lakh people, construct roads, schools, universities and what not? The more we increased our revenue, the Centre took away more money. Why is the Centre behaving arrogantly? They want to starve us.

How does the Congress expect people of Bengal to vote for them after neglecting the State? They have looted the country. And they behave as if they are running the show here. After independence, Congress has ruled India for the most number of years. They have destroyed the country. We should ask them whether they have any shame after selling the country.

It is now time to reject both Congress and CPI(M). Vote for development. Vote for us. BJP-Congress-CPI(M) have formed an understanding to divide the votes. We all saw how Congress and BJP came together to pass the Telangana Bill. We believe in working for the people. We can never betray their trust.

Is there any question among you regarding the transparency, credibility, honesty or accountability of the Trinamool Congress? Trinamool does not need money from chit funds to run our party. Chit funds started flourishing in Bengal when CPI(M) was in power. Why did the SEBI and RBI not act against chit funds earlier? It is during our rule that chit fund owners have gone to jail. We have even arrested our own MP. We returned money to 6 lakh people though it was not our responsibility to do so.

Why did certain sections of the media run ads for chit funds? Several events organized by some media houses were sponsored by chit funds. Are they not equally guilty? Trinamool Congress does not need the backing of media houses to win elections. We passed a bill to regulate chit funds and sent it to the Centre for clearance. They sent it back as it was election season.

Congress has sold the country through scams and price rise. Only we protest against them. I will protest for the sake of the people as long as I am alive. Let the Opposition carry out as many malicious campaigns as they want. I am not afraid. Opposition is hatching conspiracies to kill me and pass it on as accident. But God is protecting me.

I fight for the people of Bengal. People of Bengal will judge the actions of the Opposition. They will speak through ballots, not bullets. Bengal will teach the Centre a lesson. Centre will be dependent on us, not the other way round.

We are setting up ITIs, polytechnic colleges, multi super specialty hospitals, revamping Maldah Medical College, setting up Kisan Bazars. We have already developed a branch Secretariat in Siliguri. Another one will come up at Maldah. Maldah’s mangoes, aamsatto, Tulaupunji rice are being sold across the globe through Biswa Bangla store.

If you give me a chance, I will come again. Our candidates in Maldah are Soumitra Roy and Dr. Moazzem Hossain. I urge you all to vote against BJP-Congress-CPI(M) on 24th April.

North Dinajpur needs true poriborton: Didi at Chakulia

Trinamool Chairperson today called for poriborton in North Dinajpur district at a rally in Chakulia. She said that despite having a Congress MP and a Congress led government at the Centre, the district has been neglected. She added that the Left and the Congress came together to form the Zilla Parishad. She listed the initiatives of the West Bengal Government for North Dinajpur district and said more developmental projects are in the pipeline.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

I welcome all who are present here. I have come here a bit early. I like to be present early and I like to complete any work before the scheduled time. I always like to deliver before time and keep my promise. In spite of the scorching sun, you have come here to this meeting; I thank you for your presence.

Congress runs the Government at Centre. Even your MP is from Congress. The MP can only be seen during elections. You have given chance to Congress a number of times. They did not do anything for this district. The Congress is involved in scandals, takes your votes and then vanishes for the next five years.

Although the Opposition controls the Panchayats and Zilla Parishads here, we are carrying out developmental projects. We are setting up a university at Raiganj. ITIs, marketing hubs and Kisan Bazars are being set up in every block. We have distributed 28 lakh Kisan Credit cards and have given away 2 lakh land pattas in two and a half years.

We have given scholarships to 57 lakh minority students. We are setting up polytechnic colleges in every sub-division. Two multi-super specialty hospitals are coming up in this district at Raiganj and Islampur.

Centre wants to set up AIIMS at Raiganj. Why didn`t they do it? We cannot forcibly acquire land for them. We had offered them land at other places. We are setting up model schools, English medium madrassahs. We have given second language status to Urdu and Hindi.

We want to encourage girls to pursue education. So we have started Kanyashree scholarship scheme. We have started Yuvashree scheme for unemployed youth. One lakh people can register their names in employment banks. When they get jobs, another one lakh youth will be registered.

The Centre has stopped giving us funds. The jute industry in North Dinajpur is suffering. Centre has increased the prices of fertilizers, petrol, diesel, coal, cooking gas. People now have to buy cooking gas at Rs 900 instead of Rs 450. They brought FDI in retail to kill the small traders. We left UPA when they did it but never left the side of the people. We work for the people. We cannot betray them for the sake of power.

BJP-Congress-CPI(M) have money power. A section of the media supports them. We had an alliance with Congress in 2011. We helped them win. But Congress betrayed us and put up Independents and helped the Left to win. If you want development and employment, vote for Trinamool Congress in these elections.

We want CPI(M)-Congress-BJP to lose. Ensure our victory. For 34 years the Left kept making promises but did not do anything. They will take your votes and then implicate you in false cases. We believe in harmony between all religions, just like what Sri Ramakrishna preached.

We left Congress and formed Trinamool when the party sold itself to the Left. The Left could be defeated only because Trinamool Congress was formed. The Congress could have never done that. Congress is the partner of CPI(M). There has not been any poriborton here. The CPI(M) is thinking that there candidate might win because of vote division. Their tricks will not work anymore.

BJP and Congress have a secret understanding. They have already teamed up over the Telangana issue. Now they want to divide Bengal. CPI(M) is also with them. We want to give political farewell to the BJP, CPI(M) and Congress.

Centre is depriving Bengal of funds. We do not have money to even pay salaries. Yet we are working for you. We have to snatch our right from the Centre. No government can be formed without our support. You must ensure Trinamool`s victory if you want progress of Bengal. Vote for the joraphool symbol. It symbolizes communal harmony between Hindus and Muslims. I have faith on the youth of Bengal. You are the future of the State.

Vote for change. Vote for peace. Jai Hind.

Time has come for Poriborton in Maldah: Trinamool Chairperson at Farakka

Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee today campaigned for the party`s candidate in the South Maldah constituency, Dr Moazzem Hossain. During her speech, she urged people to shun Congress and CPI(M) and vote for Trinamool. The Chairperson said that despite winning successive elections in the region, Congress MPs never worked for the people. She promised to work for the development of Maldah and Murshidabad if elected.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

As you all know, I met with an accident yesterday. In spite of that, I have come here to hold this rally. These meetings are really important as you have come all the way and had been waiting. I am happy that I could come here and meet you. I welcome you all.

Farakka is an important place. This is an industrial town. In the past we were in alliance with the Congress and did not field candidates here. But now we are fighting alone. Farakka needs development and we will do a lot of work here.

We used to work for Congress. But we left Congress and formed Trinamool Congress when it sold itself to the CPI(M) in Bengal. We understood that Congress would do nothing against CPI(M); the Left would still be ruling in Bengal if Trinamool Congress was not formed. There are some Congress leaders who win elections and then never do any work. You have seen 34 years of Left rule and 66 years of Congress rule. They have not done any work.

In the last two and a half years, we have worked hard for the people. Our Government has already created reservation for the minority communities in education and jobs. We have allotted money for setting up a medical hub in Maldah. Kisan bazaars, marketing hubs and polytechnics are being set up in every block, ITIs are coming up in every sub-division. A new coal mine will come up in Birbhum where a lot of employment opportunities will be created.

Water level is decreasing in Ganga. The barrage needs renovation. Water is being given away to neighbouring countries without our consent. If water level keeps decreasing, Farakka will soon have drinking water problems. Irrigation and the ports in Kolkata will suffer. I wrote to the Prime Minister when extra water was being released. There are people who do not want Bengal to prosper and hence are deliberately doing these things.

We do not buy votes with money. Our work for the people will win us votes. Even a millionaire has one vote just like a labourer. Money cannot buy votes.

The Congress led government at the Centre has failed the people. They have done nothing for the people. They are taking away our hard earned money. Had it not been the case, I could have created more employment opportunities. The Left Front government incurred debts and the Centre is taking away all our revenue. The Left Front ruled using violence and muscle power. They unleashed a reign of terror. Why did the Centre not stop the Left from borrowing money?

The Congress MPs from Maldah have failed to raise their voice regarding local issues in the Parliament. Barkat da was a great leader. His family members are exploiting his name for votes. They can only be seen during the elections. In 2011, we had an alliance with Congress. Yet they fielded Independent candidates against us. Nobody spares those who betray the trust of others.

The Congress and BJP are one and the same. Congress, CPI(M) and BJP have a secret understanding to cut our votes. Congress and BJP came together to divide Andhra. Now they want to divide Bengal. BJP says one thing in the Hills and something else in the plains regarding division of Bengal. Bengal has a tradition of communal harmony.

Congress gave a go ahead to FDI in retail. Congress raised the price of cooking gas from Rs 450 to Rs 900. They increased the prices for fertilizers, coal, fuel etc. Congress and BJP have sold the country. CPI(M) has destroyed Bengal.

We have served people to the best of our ability. We have started Kanyashree scheme. Girls will be encouraged to pursue education through this scheme. We have started Yuvashree scheme for the youth.

We do not have any elected representative from Maldah. Time for Poriborton has come. Everyone must come together to vote for Trinamool for the progress of Bengal.

Trinamool does not need black money to fight elections: Didi at Nalhati

Trinamool congress Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee addressed a rally at Nalhati in Birbhum district. While speaking, she attacked the Opposition on the chit fund issue. The Chairperson said that Trinamool does not need illegal money to fight elections. The Opposition should prove its allegations, she commented while adding that chit funds flourished in Bengal during the Left Front rule.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

I have done a lot for the development of this district. Our candidate for this constituency, Satabdi Roy, has always been there for the people. The Opposition is trying every trick in the book to defeat us. Why do they fear me so much? I am an individual. And the more they try to intimidate me, the more strength I gain. Those who do not understand this simple fact, live in a fool`s paradise.

We have introduced reservations for minorities in jobs and in education. We are setting up 500 marketing hubs, which we will employment opportunity for 5 lakh people. Hospitals, colleges, large and small industries are being set up in this district. A lot of work is going on.

For farmers, we have raised the price of paddy. We are also looking into the problems faced by jute cultivators. The Central Government has raised the price of fertilizers, cooking gas, fuel and every other commodity. On the other hand, we distributed 28 lakh Kisan Credit cards so that farmers are able to take loans from banks for agricultural purposes.

The State Government is setting up three multi super speciality hospitals in the district at Rampurhat, Bolpur and Siuri. We have set up fair price medicine shops. We are building Kisan Bazars and ITIs in every block.  The Centre is taking away all our money. Yet, we are working for the people. The Opposition has money power. A section of the media is working for them.

We have not taken any money from any chit fund. Let the Opposition prove their allegations. Chit funds started in Bengal during the Left regime. Why did many media houses give ad space to chit funds? Trinamool does not work with black money. We do not need illegal money. The Opposition and a section of the media have hatched a conspiracy to stifle our voice.

The Congress has sold the country through scams. People will give a fitting reply to the Opposition for their malicious campaign. The more the Opposition tries to malign me, the greater is the rise in support of the people for me. The Opposition may try its best to malign me. I hold no grudge.

I was advised my doctors not to hold rallies today. But I made a promise to people. I could not break my commitment.

Vote for the progress of Bengal. Do not vote for Congress-CPI(M)-BJP. We are fighting alone, but fighting with dignity. We have the people by our side. Congress has deprived Bengal of funds. BJP is communal. CPI(M) has ruined Bengal. BJP has come to Bengal to divide the State. We will not allow our motherland to be divided.

Vote for Satabdi on 30th April. Press the button on joraphool symbol. Bengal will lead the way for India in future.

First person account of the fire in WB CM`s hotel room in Maldah

This is the first person account of Ashok Majumdar, a photojournalist with a leading Bengali daily, who was just two rooms away when fire broke out in the CM`s hotel room.

Translated from an article published in Ebela on 18th April, 2014

It was 6.30 PM. I was working on my laptop, transferring the pictures I had taken during the day. Suddenly, the lights in my room went off and in a flicker of a second were on again. I heard a loud noise. And then, I heard Joydeep (personal assistant of Didi) screaming, “Mithun da, Madan da, where are you all. There`s a fire. Save Didi.”

I was staying at room number 202 on the 1st floor, two rooms away from where the Trinamool Chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister was taking rest. For a moment I did not understand that the loud noise had come from Trinamool Chairperson`s room. The moment I rushed out of my room, I saw Ms. Banerjee. She was shaken and was coughing. A blanket was wrapped around her. Despite her trauma, she inquired about others, wanting to know if everyone else was fine.

In the meantime, Madan Mitra, the State Transport Minister and Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Mithun Chakraborty had arrived. So did Virendra, the Director of Security, Jayanta Shah, the Officer on Special Duty, Kusumkumar Dwivedi and Swarup Goswami, who were in charge of the Chief Minister`s security. Madan Mitra and Mithun tried to enter the CM`s room, but came out immediately. The smell of a pungent gas had a sickening effect and everyone started coughing in tandem.

After the rallies at Habibpur, Malatipur and Harishchandrapur, we had checked in at the hotel at around 6:10 PM. Like every other day, the CM enquired about the well-being of everyone and retired to her room. Joydeep was sitting in the drawing room while the CM was in the washroom. I spoke to Joydeep who let me know that suddenly there was a loud noise from the air-conditioning system in the bed room and the room was engulfed with thick smoke. The CM immediately screamed to alert everyone and Joydeep rushed to save her with a blanket, which was lying close by.

The Transport Minister alerted the local police and the fire brigade. When I entered the room later, I could see that CM`s bag was lying on the bed while her towel was on the wash basin of the washroom. The whole room was in a disheveled condition. The CM had been taken to an adjoining room. Her eyes were still watery because of the smoke. She had thrown up once and was still sick. Despite her illness, she kept inquiring about others. The doctors arrived and started her treatment; they advised her not to speak any more.

The Transport Minister remarked that the CM has been saved by the blessings of the people. He alleged that there was a larger conspiracy to kill the Chief Minister. In the meantime, the police spoke to the hotel management and sealed the room where the accident happened. A fire attendant I spoke to said that had the CM stayed in the room any longer, she would have fainted.

Around 9 PM at night, I visited the Chief Minister in her new room. She still had breathing problems. She was being administered oxygen from cylinders. She spoke to me in a weak voice. She lamented why such accidents always happen with her. She believes that God saved her.
