Announcing PM candidate is like even before the baby is born, its date of marriage has been fixed: Didi at Bankura

Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee addressed a rally today at Bankura in support of the party candidate Moonmoon Sen (Srimati Dev Barma). Several artists of the Bengali film fraternity were also present there along with Moonmoon Sen`s daughters – Riya and Raima Sen.

During her speech, the Chairperson lauded Bankura for emerging as the best district in India in 100-Days Work Scheme. She also said that the students of Bankura are very talented. She asked people to vote for peace and progress and shun the Opposition as they want to incite violence in Jangalmahal for political gains.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

Today is Manna De`s birthday. We had honoured him with Banga Bibhushan award. We will always remember him and he will forever live in our hearts. Today is also May Day. I salute all workers from all organized and unorganized sectors who are toiling hard every day.

You have been waiting for long in this heat. Dates of election are not fixed by us. So, common people are suffering due to heat. Earlier election process was completed in 45 days. Now it goes on for months.

Bankura is the best district in the country in 100-Days Work Scheme. Bankura has many talented students. Every year students from this district shine in Madhyamik and HS exams. For the sake of the talented students, I decided to set up a university in Bankura. They will not have to go outside the State.

In 34 years, the Left set up only one university. We have set up 8 new universities. We have set up a university named after Kazii Nazrul Islam. We have set up a Nazrul Academy. We named Andal airport after him. We have set up 31 government colleges in two and half years. Left set up only 3 in 34 years.

Those who keep criticizing us at TV studios have done no work. The Left distributed only 12000 land pattas in 2009-10. Nobody talks about the good works we did. We distributed 2 lakh pattas in two and half years. We have distributed 28 lakh Kisan Credit Cards. We promised to create 50000 ponds in 5 years. We have already created over 1 lakh ponds. We have implemented Sachar committee recommendations. 57 lakh students have got scholarships.

We distribute rice at Rs 2 per kilo to 3.2 crore people. We have opened 198 new SNSUs and 36 new SNCUs. We are opening ITIs and polytechnics. We are setting up marketing hubs that will generate jobs. We have started Kanyashree scheme for girls.

We have no greed for power. We left UPA when their policies went against the interests of the people. We have registered the highest growth in revenue collection; the Centre is taking away a major share of our money. Our fair price medicine shops are national models now. The leaders in Delhi are jealous of us because we work for the people. We have revived Bengal`s economy.

Peace prevails in Jangalmahal now. I salute the people here. Some people cannot counter us politically. So, they are inciting violence in Jangalmahal and Darjeeling. Leaders like Gandhiji, Netaji, Maulana Azad, Ambedkar believed in politics of courtesies. Some leaders today have reduced the level of political discourse to new lows. I do not respect them.

Congress-BJP-CPI(M) have an understanding to cut our votes.  I respect Leftist ideology. But the communists in Bengal have sold their ideology to the Congress and BJP. The MP of Bankura has remained unchanged for over many decades. Poriborton happened at Assembly level in Bengal. Now you have to change your MP. Do not vote for the Opposition. CPI(M) indulges in malicious campaigns. Congress hatches conspiracies and BJP ignites communal violence.

Announcing PM candidate is like even before the baby is born, its date of marriage has been fixed. A person who has stains of riots in his hands, someone who wants to divide Bengalis and non Bengalis, can never become the PM. Indian Constitution is secular. A person who is not inclusive can never hold the PM post. Where are these political leaders during Durga Puja or Kali Puja? They can be seen only during election season. We do not have to learn about Hinduism from parties which indulge in religious parties.

When the British partitioned Bengal in 1905, Rabindranath started rakhee utsav between Hindus and Muslims. Bengal`s soil is pluralistic. Bengal has a rich legacy of communal harmony. Ramakrishna talked about Sarva Dharma Samanyay. We celebrate Durga Puja, we also attend Eid celebrations. Politics of violence and religious riots will not be tolerated on the soil of Bengal.

The youth are the future of India. They have to build a better nation. Without the youth, Poriborton would not have been possible. The mothers in every household of Bengal are like my mother. People of Bengal are my family. I cannot be intimated by violence. I cannot be stopped by malicious campaigns. Trinamool Congress will emerge as a national party.

Paper tigers can never compete with Royal Bengal Tigers. Money power of CPI(M)-BJP-Congress will never win over people power. Vote for joraphool on 7th May. Vote for Trinamool. Give a fitting reply to the malicious campaigns of the Opposition.

Will not allow BJP to incite riots in Bengal: Trinamool Chairperson at Purulia

Trinamool Chairperson today campaigned at Purulia in support of the party candidate Mriganko Mahato. During her speech she highlighted the development projects initiated by her Government for the district. She stressed on the fact that Jangalmahal now lives in peace.

She said that the Government is taking steps to boost the tourism industry in Purulia. The Chairperson also criticised the political parties that were trying to incite religious and ethnic tension in Bengal. She said, as long as she is alive, there can be no riot in Bengal.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

I know that these areas suffer from water crisis. I have already taken steps to solve the problem. We have allotted Rs 1200 crore to supply water to the residents of 20 blocks in Purulia and in Bankura. It will take some time. In the mean time, Government is taking all measures to ensure people of Purulia and Bankura are not deprived of water.

We are setting up Institutes to encourage lac cultivation in Purulia. We are setting up Kisan Bazars, ITIs, polytechnic colleges, Kisan Mandis in Purulia. 3 engineering colleges are coming up. We are setting up a medical college here. This district has been endowed with several natural wonders. Purulia is truly Rupashi Bangla as described by Jibananada Das. I have visited Ayodhya Hills. We are developing a tourism circuit in this district.

Raghunathpur is being developed as an industrial town. We have received investments worth Rs 26000 crore. Trinamool will be contesting in the assembly election in the adjoining state of Jharkhand. We contested in the Lok Sabha seats there. Jharkhand and Bengal should work together to utilize the natural resources.

We are upgrading the Deven Mahato Hospital to a multi super specialty hospital in Purulia. We have set up fair price discount shops. You can get medicines at 60% discount at these shops. We are also setting up 36 fair price diagnostic centres. We are distributing medicines for free to poor people at rural health centres.

We have started the Kanyashree project for encouraging girls to pursue education. We have also started the Nija Bhumi, Nija Griha scheme. No family will be landless or homeless in Bengal anymore. We have given land pattas to 2 lakh poor people in two and half years. Today Bengal is the No. 1 State in 100-Days Work Scheme. I ask the Zilla Parishads to do their work well. I have conducted 54 meetings at BDO level to ensure work is getting done.

Gujarat spent only Rs 500 crore for 100-Days Scheme. We spent Rs 5521 crore. Infant mortality rate, maternal mortality rate and school dropout rate in Gujarat is higher than Bengal.

Left Front has destroyed Bengal in 34 years. We are rebuilding the State. Earlier, people of Jangalmahal lived in fear because of violence. Now peace prevails here. It is all your credit. CPI(M)-Congress-BJP have formed a nexus. Some people want to disturb the peace in Jangalmahal. I have been visiting Jangalmahal throughout the year, not only before elections. I advise you, do not fall for traps.

We have included Al Chiki in our syllabus. We love and care for our tribal brothers and sisters. We have given recognition to Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Al Chiki. We work for all. We have made reservations for minority community people.

CPI(M)-Congress-BJP are jobless in Bengal now. They rely on each other to cut our votes. Centre is taking away a major share of our revenue. If we had the money I could have generated more jobs. In spite of the financial crunch, we have recruited constables and civic police.

We have set up 88 fast-track courts, 26 women`s police station, 19 human rights courts. We have created more than 1 lakh ponds already, surpassing our 5-year target of 50000.

The Opposition only indulges in peddling lies. They cannot counter us politically; they use paid news and malicious campaigns against us. But we will not stoop to their level. Our actions speak for us.

I salute all my worker friends and their families on the occasion of International Labour Day.

Our poll issue to ensure the unity of Bengal. Our issue is to demand our right from the Centre. Our issue is political and economic stability. We want pro-people policies. We do not work without the Ma, Mati, Manush by our side.

We will not allow BJP to incite riots in Bengal. Indian Constitution is secular. People who instigate riots between different religions and ethnicity can never become PM. Every citizen of India deserves to stay together in peace. No one has the right to pack anyone off from India. We are Royal Bengal Tiger, not paper tiger. We will take action against divisive politics.

Had it not been for Trinamool, Left Front rule would never have ended. The Left Front has forgotten its ideology. They can never return to power.

Vote for the joraphool symbol on 7th May. Put an end to the malicious campaigns of BJP-Congress-CPI(M). Bengal will lead the way for Bengal in future. Your Didi will always be by your side. We will work for development. We will not allow anymore violence here.

BJP is sowing seeds of discord in Bengal: Trinamool Chairperson at Kultali

Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee addressed two campaign rallies in support of the party candidate for Joynagar constituency Pratima Mandal. The first meeting was held at Jamtala in Kultali and the second was held at the Canning Stadium Maidan.

At the rally in Kultali, the Trinamool Chairperson said that the prime ministerial candidate of the BJP is trying to create a division between Hindus and Muslims in Bengal and the people will act against it. She asked people to vote decisively against the BJP for planting the seeds of discord in Bengal.

Ms. Banerjee said that Modi has his hands stained with the bloods of the Gujarat riots. She said that while the CPI(M) is the cloud of spreading misinformation, BJP is the storm of conspiracy. The Congress and the CBI are brothers, she said, pointing out that the CBI could not nab any culprits in the Left era while the CID had recently nabbed five accused in the Netai carnage. She said the Left parties used money allotted for development of villages to pile up arms and weapons. She urged the people to vote without fear as the Left regime has finally ended and she was there to protect them.

At Canning Ms. Banerjee said that CPI(M) only laid foundation stones in that area while the in the last two and half years, the Trinamool Government has produced results. The stadium is a testimony of the Government`s works, she added.

She said that a leader is playing cards of divisive politics and is trying to drive away people from Bengal by calling them Bangladeshi refugees. This is not acceptable in a secular country, she said. Those who play such dirty politics should not be the Prime minister, she added.

She said the CPI(M) has formed an understanding with the BJP and the Congress to gain from the division of votes. She urged the people to make sure all these parties lose the polls.

She also said that the Trinamool Congress had supported SUCI in the last Lok Sabha Elections but after winning, the MP now has contacts with CPI(M). This time, the Trinamool Congress has fielded its own candidate and the people can vote for her, she said.

The Trinamool Chairperson urged the people to stand up against the coalition of BJP-Congress-CPI(M). She said that she may be alone but the people`s support is with her and they will ensure she has enough strength in Delhi.

Those Who Stoke Riots Can’t Lead India: Trinamool Chairperson at Asansol

Speaking at an election rally at Asansol on April 30, Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee said “those who stoke riots can never be the leader of the nation”.

“If you want to be in Indian politics, you have to accept secularism and that is what our Constitution says,” she told reporters without taking Modi`s name.

“Secularism means seeing everyone from the same eyes … The leaders of the country should be like Ambedkar.

She accused the BJP prime ministerial hopeful of instigating `parochial feelings` and said people from all parts of the country had been living in Bengal for centuries.

“Will you ignite communal riots by coming to Kolkata? Those who speak Bengali will be packed off to Bangladesh – what courage! Such a thing will not happen in Bengal,” she said.

“We will not allow any division between Bengalis and non-Bengalis,” she said.

She also attacked Congress saying it was responsible for the surge of BJP. “Congress is responsible for the communalism of BJP,” she said.

“BJP had a surge also because of Congress-led UPA government`s failure to check spiralling prices of essential commodities, petrol and diesel and also for selling out the country,” the Trinamool Congress chief said.

The Chairperson added: “It is Bengal that is why your meetings have not been banned despite talking about racism.”

“Despite knowing that they (Bengalis and non-Bengalis) are living together peacefully in West Bengal, you talk of them when election comes. Why are you doing this?” questioned Ms. Banerjee.

1000 days at a glance: Achievements of the Department of Labour

West Bengal Government always has the interests of the people at the top of the list of priorities. The government is committed towards providing employment opportunities to the youth, as well as ensuring the rights of the workers. The Government is committed to reviving the work culture, which is reflected in the reduction in the decrease in the number of man-days lost due to strikes. Social security of the labourers is also top priority for the All India Trinamool Congress led Ma, Mati, Manush Government.

Here are some of the achievements of the Labour Department:

New Employment Bank to provide new opportunities: The number of verified and registered employment-seekers so far after the Employment Bank portal was introduced in July 2012 is approximately 15 lakh. The number of verified and registered employers is 279 (as of 31.01.2014).

New Dimension Yuvashree Project: We have introduced the Yuvashree Project in order to provide the unemployed youth with monthly incentives. The project, with the message `Do away with despair, build up life,` is being implemented from October 2013. A decision to grant Rs 1500 as allowance to the first 1 lakh eligible employment-seekers registered with the New Employment Bank, to provide new opportunities to unemployed youth, has been taken. At present, 87,000 young job-seekers have availed themselves of this allowance.

Employment: During 2013-14, new employment provisions have surpassed the target to reach 13.22 lakh. We have planned to make more than 16 lakh employment opportunities in financial year 2014-15.

Enhancement of age-limit for recruitment to government jobs: The age-limit for recruitment to government jobs has been enhanced to 40 years in case of general candidates, 45 years for SC / ST candidates and 43 years for differently-abled and OBC candidates.

Reduction in the number of man-days on account of strikes: Work culture is back in the state after the new government has assumed power. The number of man-days lost due to strikes was nearly 3.06 crore in the span of 2007-2011 whereas it has been reduced to 60,000 during 2011-12. During 2012-13 it has further reduced to 5200 and till January 2014 the number is equivalent to 0.

More speed to social security projects: The number of registered workers in social security projects was 26 lakh within the span of 2001-2011, with an average of 2.6 lakh per year. The number jumped to 31 lakh, with an average of 12.4 lakh per year, from the period of May 2011 to January 2014.

An amount of Rs 9 crore was distributed among 45,000 workers from 2001 to April 2011. Whereas, from May 2011 to January 2014, Rs 176 crore was distributed among 6.32 lakh workers.

Samajik Mukti Card – all facilities at hand: Workers in the unorganised sector have easy access to their accounts of State-Assisted Scheme of Provident Fund for Unorganised Workers (SASPFUW) through smart cards. So far, 7.5 lakh workers in the unorganised sector have been given smart cards.

Shramik Mela: For the first time, Shramik Melas are being organised to reach out to more workers in the unorganised sector. Such fairs as these are being organised in seven places in 2014.

Shramik Barta – all news ready at hand: The Labour Department has been publishing a quarterly Bengali journal named Shramik Barta since August 2013.

ESI – manifold increase in facilities: The ESI Hospital of Manicktala has been modernised through the introduction of modular operation theatre, and post-graduate courses in pathology and anaesthesia have been introduced in this hospital. This is the first ESI Hospital in the country to be declared a Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science and Research.

For the first time in India, a Pain Management Institute has been operational at the ESI Hospital in Sealdah.

Services of ESI Hospitals have been introduced in regions out of the purview of their service-areas. Service-dispensaries have been operational in Midnapore town, Berhampur, Malda, Rampurhat and Jamuria during the tenure of the present government.

Plans to divide the people of Bengal will not succeed: Didi at Burrabazar

Trinamool Chairperson today addressed three rallies in support of the party candidate Sudip Bandyopadhyay at Burrabazar, Rajabazar and Beleghata. At Burrabazar and Rajabazar, she spoke at length about the unity of the various communities living in Bengal.

She said that some leaders are trying to drive a wedge between people based on religion, caste or language but their plans will not succeed. She thanked the trading community for their support and cooperation. She also remarked that the leader of the nation should be inclusive and acceptable to everyone.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

I am thankful to all my friends, brothers and sisters for coming to this rally. I wish you all Shubho Noboborsho. There is nothing new to tell about our candidate, Sudip Bandopadhyay. He is a senior leader and does not need any introduction. I am thankful to the business and trading community in Burrabazar and Satyanaryan Park area for cooperating with the government at all times. We promised to set up a new police station in this area. Work in going on. This is a very congested area. We are taking all steps to prevent fire tragedies here.

We have formed a task force to monitor the prices of commodities. We have formed a coordination committee. Business communities are part of it. When parties have no political issues, they indulge in personal attacks and malicious campaign. The party which is dreaming of forming the next Govt at Centre is indulging in personal attacks. We have shown what we can do and we do not need certificates from BJP. We have the certificate from people.

We are against FDI in retail and we left the ministerial posts to protest against it. Congress and BJP are dividing India. They did it in Telangana. Now they want to target other places. CPI(M) talks of big ideals. But they have forgotten their own principles. CPI(M) is the face and BJP and Congress are its masks. People can see through their tricks. They should stop peddling lies and talk of policies.

The BJP has come just before the elections and they want to divide Bengalis and non Bengalis. This is highly deplorable. I ask you all. Have you ever faced any discrimination because of being non-Bengalis? Some people incite riots in the name of religion or castes. They now want to drive a wedge between Bengalis and non-Bengalis. When Gujarat riots happened, we protested. We protested when people were massacred in Maharashtra.

In other parts of India, they consider anyone who speaks in Bangla as Bangladeshi. On the other hand, we always speak of communal harmony. After Gujarat earthquake, I helped in rebuilding the State as Railway Minister. Every community living in Bengal has sent letters of protest against the comments made by a leader. One man dreaming of becoming the PM wants to send Bengalis away from India.

A leader must be inclusive. One must learn to respect all communities. Was Gandhiji a leader of Hindus, Muslims or Christians? No. He was the leader of India. Netaji, Ambedkar, Maulana Azad – they were true leaders of India. A leader must work for the country. Not serve themselves.

I have not taken government accommodation. I live in a small house. I have no affinity for money. One cannot become a leader just by using money power. He may have bought the media, but he cannot buy people. Where are they getting the money to put so many ads in newspapers? They are bringing people from other States to fill their rallies. We don`t do that.

Many people migrated from across the border during Partition. That was legal. In 1971 there was Indira-Mujib pact. Before that there was the Nehru-Liyakat pact. We want our relations to be harmonious with our neighbours. But this man is burning bridges already. If he becomes PM, there will fire of discord in the country.

I participate in Chhat puja. How many times has NaMo babu attended Chhat? Has he ever had thekua during Chhat Puja? We participate in Gangasagar Mela. We organise Durga Puja. We also celebrate Eid. I can tell the different names of Ma Kali. We don`t need to learn about Hinduism from them.

To run a nation, we must accommodate people from all walks of life. Only Ram Ram is not enough. Ganesh Chaturthi, Shiv Ratri, Jagaddhatri Puja – we participate in all festivals. You are free to do your puja. Why do they have a problem if Muslims go to mosque or Sikhs go to gurdwara? Someone who cannot unite the nation can never be the leader of the country.

Indian Constitution is secular. And I stand by the Constitution. People of all communities and religions live in Bengal. To safeguard the honour and unity of Bengal, everyone must reject the BJP. When Bengal was partitioned in 1905, Rabindranath Tagore started rakhee festival between Hindus and Muslims.

Centre takes away major share of Bengal`s earning. We are paying for the sins of the Left. Gujarat`s revenue earning growth is only 15% while that in Bengal is 31%. Industrialization happened in Gujarat before he took over as CM. Growth has declined in Gujarat. Gujarat receives a lot of funds from NRIs. Atal ji gave a lot of funds to Gujarat. In 100-Days Work Scheme we spent Rs 5500 crore while Gujarat spent only Rs 500 crore for job creation. The infant mortality rate in Gujarat is 41 while in Bengal it is only 32.

I will give my life but I will never allow Bengal and India to be divided. Every Indian has the right to stay in any State they want. This is our tradition. Someone who has no control over what he speaks, how can he rule the nation? The least said about Congress, the better. They have sold the country. I protested for the trading community when Nandaram market was on fire. What has the CPI(M) done? Congress-CPI(M)-BJP have come together just for the elections.

We need a Government at Centre that cares for the people and understands the pulse of the common man. First they tried to divide Darjeeling. Now they are inciting hatred between communities. As long as I live, I will work for all. We do not make any discrimination.

Work culture in Bengal has improved. From 2007-11 the number of mandays lost was over 3 crore. Now it is nil. Peace prevails in Jangalmahal. Violence has come down to a great extent. People of Bengal want to live in peace. Peace brings prosperity. I will work for the aam janta till my last breath. CPI(M)-BJP-Congress cannot stop me. Some sections of the media are publishing fabricated news against me. I am not bothered. Our Government works with honesty and integrity.

I want to salute my brothers and sisters of the working class ahead of May day. I don`t play dirty games in politics. We also can say a lot of things. But we don`t. We know the limitations in public discourse. The fire of communal riots will engulf those who encourage it.

Shower your love on joraphool, and we will live up to your trust.

1000 days at a glance – Electricity for all

Supplying electricity to all has been a focus of the West Bengal Government ever since Trinamool led Ma, Mati, Manush Government came to power. In just two years, West Bengal has increased its installed capacity base from 8,316.8 MW in 2010-11 to 9,974.1 MW in 2012-13. This shows the efforts put in by the state government to keep the power surplus state ready for 100% electrification in the years to come.

There have been some significant developments in every sphere of the power sector from generation to transmission:

Thermal Power: Initiative has been taken to construct thermal power centres with capacity of 1500 MW at Santaldih, Durgapur and Sagardighi. With the concurrence of State Government, N.T.P.C. is going to start Katwa Thermal power project (1320 MW) near Bardhman. This project will invite an investment of Rs 10000 crore. Another thermal power plant, under D.V.C., with the capacity of 2,520 MW is being constructed at Raghunathpur in Purulia.

Hydro Power: Through the Lodhama Interconnection Scheme, there will be an increase in production of 30 MW power during the dry season. With the supply of extra water from Teesta, there has been a remarkable increase in production of power under the `Teesta Canal Fall Hydel Power Scheme`.

Sabar Ghare Alo: West Bengal is one of the few states in country which supplies electricity 24X7 all throughout the year. Under the aegis of `Sabar Ghare Alo` scheme, the state government aims to supply power to every household in the state before the end of 2015-16. Due to these efforts 31 lakh BPL families have now been given electricity connections till end of January 2014. West Bengal Electricity Distribution Co. LTD. has added about 1.35 crore customers in past 34 months, which amounts to about 40000 customers every month.

Boosting the transmission infrastructure:

  • High tension: Transmission infrastructure for high tension segment has been developed through the addition of 343,000 kilowatts (kvA) in transformer capacity and construction of 887 km high tension (HT) transmission line, in last 30 months.
  • Low tension: During the same time, in case of low tension (LT) line, enhancement of 2,654,000 kilowatts (kvA)in transformer capacity and construction of new 2,51,674 km low tension line have been completed.
  • Transmission Sub-stations: Being first of such initiatives in government sector, two gas-insulated sub-stations have been installed in Salt Lake and Bagnan with a capacity of 132 kv each. Also, transmission sub-stations have been installed at 6 new locations across the state.

Better customer service: Many steps have been taken to improve services given to consumers such as monitoring system to inspect the operational health of machineries, arrangement of over 1100 mobile vans to maintain the LT and HT lines, interactive voice response system to register the grievances, system of spot billing and payment of bills through letters in many service centres.

Preparing to combat accidents: For the first time ever in India, a centralised database and data retrieval centres for providing necessary support in case of accidents, have been started in West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd.

Power Banking: The excess power produced in the state is being saved under the Power Banking scheme to be utilized in peak hours.

Awards: Because of its efforts State Power Transmission Company has got the `Power Line` 2012 award as the best power transmission company of India. Power Finance Corporation, IKRA and CARE together in a rating for 2013 have announced West Bengal State Power Transmission Company as the second best transmission company in India.

Mamata Banerjee speaks this Monday

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee today responded to the baseless allegations and inflammatory comments made by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a public rally on April 27. She slammed the Gujarat Chief Minister for trying to divide Bengalis and non Bengalis.

She said, “Modi is a devil. He has already presided over riots in his own State and has turned his attention towards Bengal now. He wanted to separate Darjeeling. Now he wants to divide the Hindus and Muslims in the State. My Bihari and Marwari friends have protested against his statement. People will not give him a single vote.”

She also said, “Everyone is our brother and sister, whether they belong to Gujarat or Bihar. We do not discriminate between people based on whether they speak Gujarati, Bihari or Tamil. We don't do casteism and dirty politics.”

Accusing the Gujarat CM of being ignorant of history, Ms. Banerjee added, “Bangla is the fifth most widely spoken language in the world. Elsewhere in India, people who speak in Bangla are branded Bangladeshis. This is discrimination. Bengal was united at one point of time in history. We love and respect our neighbours. The Bangladeshis who migrated to India followed the 1971 Indira-Mujib agreement. You cannot throw out legal immigrants from this country.”

West Bengal Chief Minister added that the person being projected as the next PM is divisive and if he actually becomes the PM, the nation will plunge into darkness.

Countering the claims of development in Gujarat, she said that Bengal is doing better than the western State and that growth has actually declined in Gujarat under Mr Modi. “The metric for true development is welfare of the poor. In 100-Days work scheme, we spent Rs 5500 crore for employment generation. Gujarat spent only Rs 500 crore. Revenue earning in Bengal has increased by 31% while in Gujarat it has grown by 15% only.”

“Infant mortality rate in Bengal is 31 out of 1000 births. For Gujarat it is 42. When we took over two and a half years ago, 3 crore mandays were lost in Bengal. The figure is nil now. Bank lending to MSME, which is a good reflection of the health of the economy, grew by 106% in Bengal while the growth in this parameter in Gujarat was only 34%. We have provided toilets in 92% schools in Bengal,” she added.

“We do not need gyan on development from the architects from riots. He has no right to be in politics” the West Bengal Chief Minister added.

On the campaign trail with… Kalyan Banerjee

Kalyan Banerjee, a renowned senior advocate is the sitting MP from Serampore constituency. His constituency is spread across parts of the districts of Howrah and Hooghly. Known as a person who `gets the works done` for his constituency, Mr Banerjee is an extremely popular figure in Serampore.

He had been the leading advocate during many legal battles to uphold the rights of common people – right from the case of Bikhari Paswan of Victoria Jute Mill to the Rizwanur Rahman murder case.

Arupratan Chakraborty from the Trinamool Web team had the opportunity to accompany the veteran leader on his campaign trail on April 23, 2014.

7:30 AM: Serampore, MP office of Kalyan Banerjee

Kalyan da, who had a very busy day yesterday is in his office, busy firing away dictations. Yesterday, the goons from Opposition parties had attacked his car in Jangipara. He would be filing complaints regarding the matter. Another very long and torturous day is in the waiting.

Kalyan Banerjee`s padayatra

8:30 AM: On the way to Bankra

Kalyan da has his phone ringing intermittently. He takes all calls, all of which are related to the day`s campaign programmes. In the meantime he switches on the tape recorder in the car and plays his newest campaign module, a CD containing songs. The specialty is that the lyrics of most of the songs have been penned by Ms. Mamata Banerjee.

State Irrigation Minister with Kalyan da

9:30 AM: Bankra More, Makardah Road

A padayatra is scheduled for the day. A crowd of more than thousand people is ready with banners and flags, wearing caps displaying their allegiance to the party. Rajib Banerjee, the State Irrigation Minister and MLA from Domjur joins Kalyan da and the rally starts. The 14 km padayatra passes through the by-lanes of the Bankra I, Bankra II and Bankra III blocks, covering Kazarpara, Paschimpara and Moihari Road.

Kalyan da addressing a meeting at Bankra

The temperature has shot up to 41 degrees. Surprisingly, while the fellow walkers are drained out of energies, Kalyan da says that he can walk for 2 more hours if required, despite the murderous heat. People from the adjoining houses, little children, even the women had come out from their kitchens to wave at Kalyan da and show their supports. Often during the padayatra, Kalyan da had stopped to listen to the elderly people.

1:00 PM: Uttarpara

Kalyan da and his core team reach the Uttarpara office. A strategy meeting is held and discussions over the social media strategy are carried out.
