Mamata Banerjee to attend canonization of Mother Teresa in Rome

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be travelling to Rome this September to attend the canonization ceremony of Mother Teresa where the mother will be declared a saint.

Sister Prema, superior-general of the Missionaries of Charity, Archbishop of Calcutta Thomas D’Souza went to Ms Banerjee’s home in Kolkata’s Kalighat area Sunday afternoon and invited her to the Vatican event.

“I have accepted Sister Prema’s invitation to be present at the canonization of blessed Mother Teresa in Rome on September 4,” Mamata Banerjee said on Twitter.

In March, Pope Francis had announced that Mother Teresa, who founded the Missionaries of Charity, will be elevated to sainthood after the Church recognized two miracles she was said to have carried out after her death in 1997.

Mamata Banerjee dedicates victory to Maa Mati Manush of Bengal

Trinamool Congress swept the West Bengal Assembly Polls 2016, blessed by the Maa Mati Manush of Bengal. Crossing the 200 mark barrier and establishing itself as the single largest majority, Mamata Banerjee proved yet again that slander campaigns by the Opposition and a section of the media only make Trinamool become stronger.

In a press conference at the Kalighat office, Mamata Banerjee thanked the Maa Mati Manush of Bengal for showering their blessings on Trinamool Congress.

Here are the excerpts of her speech at the press conference:

  • We want to thank the people of Bengal. They are the biggest pillar of democracy.
  • We have fought this election alone. The Opposition was united against us. People have given us a huge victory.
  • Trinamool won 184 seats in 2011 in alliance. This time we fought alone. Opposition was united against us.
  • There was an attempt to create an atmosphere of fear but people voted peacefully, fearlessly.
  • There were attempts to mislead people. Those incidents were shameful for politics.
  • A smear campaign was launched against us for the last two years. Several canards were spread.
  • We are thankful to the people for rejecting the smear campaign and conspiracies.
  • As an elected government we faced several hurdles while carrying out governance.
  • I appeal to all to maintain peace.
  • Several students performed well in board examinations this year. I congratulate them.
  • Our party will organise cultural functions from tomorrow till 30 May to thank the Maa, Mati, Manush.
  • In 2011, we took oath on 20 May. It is a day of #Poriborton for us.
  • Tomorrow we have called a meeting of all the newly-elected MLAs at 12:30 PM
  • We will take oath on 27 May. A session of the Assembly will be called before 29 May
  • Our responsibility has increased now. Our priority is the socio-economic development of downtrodden people
  • It is our priority to work for youth and students. We will work for artistes also
  • We will make Bengal the best among all
  • We have ideological difference with BJP. We cannot support them
  • I am not a VIP. I am LIP (Less Important Person). I want to continue to live as a commoner
  • Majority, minority – all voted together… Do not try to divide them
  • This victory is a magic of Maa, Mati, Manush. People are intelligent. They have given a fitting reply
  • If ideology is lost, everything is lost. The CPI(M)-Congress have lost everything
  • People are my strength. They give me moral support
  • This is a victory of people. This is a victory of development
  • It is our priority to work for people

Trinamool all the way in Bengal, since May 2011

On May 13, 2011, the counting of the votes started at 8 AM for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2011. Earlier the polling had been completed between April 18 and May 10, in six phases. At around 12 noon, the results indicated that Paribartan had finally come to Bengal led by Mamata Banerjee. History was rewritten.

Earlier, Trinamool Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee had ended her campaign on 9 May, 2011, in the constituency of Jadavpur. Before campaigning ended at 17:00, she appealed to the electorate to “Help me bring about change”. People showered their blessings.

The 34 years of Left oppression were washed away by the waves of change and the slogan, Bodla Noy, Bodol Chai. Mamata Banerjee became the first woman to be the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Since then, the Maa Mati Manush of Bengal has never left the side of Ms Mamata Banerjee and the ensuing developmental wave that swept past Bengal.

The successive wins in the Panchayat Elections in 2013, the Municipal Elections in 12 municipalities in 2013, the General elections in 2014 and the Municipal Elections in 2015 reaffirmed the faith of people on West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress. Besides, Trinamool Congress won several by-elections that happened time to time.

General Election 2014

The opposition parties had only one weapon to campaign against the developmental wave of Bengal under Mamata Banerjee. The major media houses were brought into alliance and a campaign of slander through television and print media tried to undermine 2 and half years of restructuring Bengal under Trinamool Congress. People of Bengal didn’t bother much before casting their votes. Out of the 42 seats, Trinamool Congress won 34, compared to 19 in 2009.

Trinamool Congress got 39.40% votes, up from 31.18% in 2009 to finish as the 4th largest party in the Lok Sabha. Around 5, 16, 22,555 people voted and the turnout of voters was 82.16%.

Municipal Election 2015

Trinamool Congress continued its winning streak by recording a thumping majority in 71 of the 92 civic bodies in West Bengal. The party wrested control of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation by winning 114 of the 144 wards. Twelve civic bodies have no clear winner. In 2010, Trinamool won 66 municipalities.

Trinamool Congress improved its performance from 95 to 114. Of the 2,090 wards in the State, the Trinamool won an overwhelming 1,425 wards.

Assembly Election 2016

Trinamool Congress won a massive victory in the 2016 Assembly elections by winning 211 out of 294 seats.

Bottomline

It is the voice of the people that matters in democracy. The people of Bengal now know who can make their life better by bringing in actual change they had waited for years. Development speaks for itself. The Trinamool Government strives for development of the people, especially the poor, the financially backward class. People of Bengal understand this simple point and their faith on their Didi remains unhindered.

Five years of Poriborton in Bengal

May 13, 2011. The date will forever be etched in history, thanks to Didi.

The 34-year old Left `citadel` in Bengal was converted to rubble. The mandate of Ma, Mati, Manush prevailed over the Red brigade.

Four years of running a cash-strapped Government is an inhuman job. West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee has proved to be much more than ordinary. Although a lion`s share of the State`s revenue is being taken away by the Centre as instalments for the debt incurred by the Left regime, with repeated requests of a debt moratorium falling onto the deaf ears of the Centre, West Bengal has carried out development in every sector in the State. Unthinkable, yet true.

What has the Government achieved in these four years? Democracy, peace and progress. Mamata Banerjee has given aconfidence to the people. There is hope in the air that Bengal can be the best. And Bengal has proven it. From fair price medicine shops to the Kanyashree scheme, from 100 Days’ Work Scheme to Jangalmahal, Bengal is a national model.

Four years ago, we had little to boastabout. Now we can boast about Brand Bengal – Biswa Bangla. Trinamool raised the slogan bodla noy, bodol chai and lived up to the principle in the last four years.

Mamata Banerjee has changed the work culture of the West Bengal Government. She did something that was unthinkable. She shifted the State Secretariat from Writers` Buildings to Nabanna (in Howrah). She set up a branch secretariat – Uttarkanya in Siliguri, North Bengal. She conducted over 80 administrative meetings at block level in four years, thus demonstrating how power can be decentralised from Kolkata to the districts.

As the old song goes-

It takes courage to answer a call,

It takes courage to lose your all,

It takes courage to risk your name,

It takes courage to be true.

It takes courage to dare,

Onethat no will share;

To bestanding alone,

One whom no one will own;

To beready to stake for another one’s sake,

It takes courage to be true.

Biswa Bangla: Bengal’s schemes now globally recognised

Shaking away the shackles of the past, West Bengal has now emerged as a model of not only India but the entire world.

Several of the schemes and projects initiated by the Trinamool Congress Government in West Bengal have gained international recognition, thus paving the way for Biswa Bangla.

Kanyashree

The Kanyashree Prakalpa, or ‘Kanyashree Scheme,’ is one of the flagship schemes of the Government, which has gained widespread recognition. After being launched on October 1, 2013, in about a year-and-a-half, more than 22 lakh girls have registered under the scheme. The government plans to extend the benefit to 40 lakh girls in the next two years.

UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) has become a partner of the West Bengal Government for the implementation of the Kanyashree Scheme. The partnership between UNICEF and the West Bengal Government is not a superficial involvement but a technical partnership. The Department for International Development (DFID), United Kingdom and UNICEF had together selected the scheme for presentation at the Girl Summit 2014 in London.

Nadia district gets UN award

Another scheme to get international recognition is the Sabar Souchagar, or ‘Toilets For All’ project, for the district of Nadia. It won the first place in the Asia-Pacific region in the ‘Improving the Delivery of Public Services’ category at the United Nations Public Service Award 2015.

The project has also been selected by Loughborough University, UK as an inspiring model for eliminating open defecation, and it is to be presented at the WEDC International Conference in July.

Bengal Panchayati Raj

The project to strengthen the panchayati raj institutions in West Bengal has been immensely praised by World Bank. According to the World Bank report presented in 2013, the performance of gram panchayats improved substantially on all fronts.

As a result, out of 1,000 gram panchayats from nine project districts, 792 qualified for receiving the block grant of financial year 2013-14, based on an independent annual performance assessment undertaken between May and September 2012.

Health insurance

The World Bank and the German organisation, Global Alliances for Social Protection (known by its German acronym, GIZ) have lauded West Bengal’s progress in executing the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY). The scheme provides cashless treatment benefits of up to Rs 30,000 per family annually through a network of 1,043 hospitals throughout the State.

West Bengal was invited to share its experiences in social sector insurance in a global learning forum in Berlin in June 2015, organised by the World Bank and GIZ.
