Budget Session – Week 6 | Party opposes regressive Right to Information & Triple Talaq Bill

Budget Session – Week 6 | Party opposes regressive Right to Information & Triple Talaq Bill

The sixth week of the Budget Session saw discussions on The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, better known as the Triple Talaq Bill, and The Right to Information (Amendment) Bill, 2019, among others.

The party’s MPs in the Lok Sabha, through their speeches, came out strongly against certain provisions of the Triple Talaq Bill that can actually lead to the condition of Muslim women being weakened. The party members staged a walkout as the Bill was passed.

The party in both the Houses opposed The Right to Information (Amendment) Bill as it actually defangs the Information Commission. To press its point, the party asked for a division vote in the Rajya Sabha.

In the Lok Sabha, the party also vehemently opposed The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill, 2019 for going against the federal structure of the Constitution.

In both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the party gave its views through Points of Order and Zero Hour mentions on technical issues related to Bills and their discussions – right of Members to circulate Amendments, allowing Members two working days to move an Amendment, on introduction of Bills, and on the simultaneous introduction of Amendments and Bills.

The party also requested the Chair of the Rajya Sabha to allow more Short Duration Discussions, as there were several crucial issues that needed to be discussed.

Besides these, the party MPs asked questions and spoke during Zero Hour every day on issues of national as well as regional importance.
