WB Govt to build housing complex for IAS officers

The state government is constructing a housing complex for senior bureaucrats in Rajarhat. The move comes due to lack of government accommodations for IAS officers and poor condition of the existing quarters.
Around 50 IAS officers of the rank of principal secretary, secretary and additional secretary will be accommodated in the plush complex.
The state Public Works Department (PWD) has recently procured a plot in Rajarhat from West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd for setting up residential quarters. The complex that spreads over five acres will include both towers with flats as well as bungalows.
Presently, bureaucrats are accommodated in residential quarters on Iron Side Road and Ballygunge Circular Road. But, the total accommodation in both the places in less than 50, which is much lower than the total requirement. Moreover, the condition of the existing quarters is very bad. Thus, there is a need to set up additional accommodation facilities for the bureaucrats.
The move comes at a time when Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee has made it mandatory for all top officials to stay in government accommodations in nearby areas, so that they are able to handle any crisis even during holidays.
The PWD has also undertaken work to construct residential quarters for 22 district ministers on Raja Santosh Roy Road in Alipore. The existing quarters for the ministers in Raj Bhavan and Salt Lake are not adequate for accommodating all ministers.
