Water taxis to operate soon in Kolkata
Along the lines of the river Thames in London, the state transport department is preparing to run two water taxis on river Hooghly.
A private company has joined hands with the West Bengal Surface Transport Corp (WBSTC) to launch two water taxis in the first phase of the Rs 13.5-crore project. It expects to have ten of these on call taxis running by the end of this year.
Two water taxis would be operated as a pilot project. The main aim is to facilitate tourism on the river, allowing people to move from tourist hotspots such as Bagh Bazar, Belur Math, Dakshineshwar and Millennium Park.
At present, passengers wishing to take the river route have to use launches that operate to a schedule. Most of these ferry services are to the railway terminus of Howrah on the western bank of the Hooghly.

গঙ্গাবক্ষে পর্যটনকে বিশ্বের দরবারে আরও আকর্ষণীয় করে তুলতে ওয়াটার ট্যাক্সি চালু করতে চলেছে মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের সরকার। ভেনিস, দুবাই, ব্যাঙ্ককের আদলে এবার কলকাতাতেও চালু হচ্ছে ওয়াটার ট্যাক্সি। মূলত বিদেশি পর্যটকদের কথা মাথায় রেখে এই পরিষেবা চালু করতে চলেছে রাজ্য পরিবহন দফতর। পাশাপাশি, সাধারণ নাগরিকরাও এই প্রমোদ ভ্রমণের মজা উপভোগ করতে পারবেন।
জানা গেছে, মূলত ২টি রুটে চলবে এই ওয়াটার ট্যাক্সি। একটি রুট হবে মিলেনিয়াম পার্ক থেকে বেলুড় হয়ে দক্ষিণেশ্বর পর্যন্ত। অন্য রুটে মিলেনিয়াম পার্ক থেকে দক্ষিণেশ্বর হয়ে বেলুড় পর্যন্ত যাবে ওয়াটার ট্যাক্সি। দু’ক্ষেত্রেই আবার ফিরতি পথে মিলেনিয়াম পার্কে ফিরে আসবে ওয়াটার ট্যাক্সি।
পরিবহন দফতর সূত্রে জানা গেছে, প্রায় ১৪ লাখ টাকা খরচ করে এই ওয়াটার ট্যাক্সি কিনেছে রাজ্য সরকার।
