Urban Development Dept & JICA to develop solid waste management project

A model project on solid waste management involving six municipalities in Hooghly will be taken up by the State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department, with funding coming from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The model is likely to be adopted by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) too. This was announced by the Urban Development Minister, who is also the mayor of Kolkata recently. JICA has already allotted Rs 170 crore for the project.

To make it a sustainable process, KMDA has formed a committee with the chairman of all the six municipalities. The capacity of the project in the district would be around 200 tonnes, while in the KMC area it would be 6,000 tonnes.

Through this new project, unlike now, segregation of solid waste into different categories would be done at the source level.
