Unemployment rate significantly low in Bangla, says Centre’s report

The percentage of unemployment in Bangla is far less than many States, including the national average, as per a report published recently by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation.

In financial year (FY) 2017-18, while the national average for the percentage of unemployment was 6.1 per cent, which is a 45-year high, the figure was 4.6 for Bangla.

Not just in totality, but among both men and women, and in both urban and rural areas, the figures for Bangla are lower than the national average.

Comparing the national average and Bangla, the unemployment figures are, for men, 6.2% and 5%, for women, 5.7% and 3.2%, for urban areas, 7.8% and 6.5%, and for rural areas, 5.3% and 3.8%.

Important examples of employment-generating opportunities are the Bantala Leather Complex, where 2.2 lakh people work now (from 10 to 15,000 once) and the Rs 44,000 crore loans distributed to MSMEs in 2018-19 (against Rs 38,000 crore). The target for the current financial year, i.e., 2019-20 is Rs 50,000 crore.

Sectors like jewellery, petro-chemical downstream products, foundry, textiles and apparel are getting policy-backed support. Encouraged by Bangla’s superior policy, several big leather companies from Kanpur have relocated to Bantala.
