Trinamool to observe Nanoor Dibas today

Like every year, this year too Trinamool will pay its homage to the martyrs of Nanoor on Nanoor Dibas today.
On July 27, 2000, trouble broke out between CPI(M) and Trinamool activists at Soochpur village in Nanoor block in the district of Birbhum over the right to cultivate a 4 bigha plot. Eleven farm workers supporting Trinamool Congress were killed mercilessly. This incident is considered one of the foremost political disturbances of recent times in Bangla.
Following this incident, the Trinamool chairperson decided to build a martyrs’ memorial in memory of those killed in the mass murder at Baspada Bus Stand in Nanoor block, and celebrate Shahid Dibas there every year.
In 2010, Mamata Banerjee, who was the Railway Minister then, took up the cause of bringing justice for the brutal killings. Ultimately 44 accused were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
This was a historic judgement as this was the first time that so many people were convicted in Bengal for mass murder.
