Trinamool plays constructive Opposition during Monsoon Session of Parliament

Week 1 and 2
The first two weeks of the 2018 Monsoon Session saw hectic activity. The No-Confidence Motion brought by Opposition parties was a strong indictment of the way the Central Government has been governing the nation.
Other than that, several important Bills and issues were discussed. Mob lynching was widely discussed. Among the Bills discussed were The Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Bill, The Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill, The Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Bill, to name a few.

Week 3
The burning topic of the week in Parliament comprised the issues regarding the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. The list, compiled by the Central Government, controversially eliminated over 40 lakh people from the list of citizens of the country.
MPs of various parties spoke on the issue in Parliament, with Trinamool Congress taking the lead. Derek O’Brien also gave a notice of suspension of business, under Rule 267, on the issue, which was not accepted. The party also requested in the Rajya Sabha for the Home Minister to come and give a statement on the issue, which was also not accepted. On the issue of heckling of the party’s delegates at Silchar Airport, Trinamool MPs of the Lok Sabha had walked out in protest against it the previous day.
Among the other issues discussed widely were The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Second Amendment) Bill, The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Third Amendment) Bill, etc, and important topics were raised in the Question Hour and the Zero Hour in both Houses of Parliament.

Week 4
The last week of the Monsoon Session saw the election of a new Deputy Speaker of the Rajya Sabha. Derek O’Brien gave the congratulatory speech on behalf of the party in the House.
In the Lok Sabha Saugata Roy brought a Privilege Motion on the issue of the publication of NRC in Assam. Many important Bills were discussed and several Zero Hour mentions made in both Houses. Among the Bills were The Constitution (123rd Amendment) Bill, The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill, The Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill. The Supplementary Demands for Grants was spoken on in the Lok Sabha.
