Trams to run in Newtown-Rajarhat

Kolkata is the only city in India where the once ubiquitous trams still play. However, due to various reasons, the frequency of tram service has reduced in the city. In order to keep the heritage mode of transport alive and kicking, the State Government has decided to run trams in Newtown and Rajarhat.
The State Transport Minister announced this decision in reply to a question in the Assembly on November 28. He said Nabadiganta and HIDCO are preparing a proposal to operate trams in Rajarhat and New Town.
In those areas there is enough space to operate this eco-friendly mode of transport. The State Government has been taking a lot of steps to check pollution and turn the city into a ‘clean and green’ one. New Town has already received the Gold rating from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for being a Green City, too.
