State Govt mulling scheme similar to Sabooj Sathi for Kolkata students

Following the huge success of Sabooj Sathi, including being nominated among the top five for the WSIS Prize in the ‘E-government’ category, given by the United Nations, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, whose conception the scheme is, has decided to introduce a similar project for the school students of Kolkata.

The Chief Minister made the announcement while addressing a programme to mark the centenary celebration of Beltala Girls’ High School on Friday, July 12.

She said that since bicycles are not allowed in most of the roads in Kolkata, a similar project would be introduced for the city students. She said the government had given raincoats for the students in Darjeeling as bicycles are hardly used in the Hills.

More than 1 crore bicycles have already been distributed to students from classes IX to XII since the inception of the Sabooj Sathi Scheme, which was announced in the 2015 State Budget.

Bicycles have empowered students as they have enabled many to attend school, especially those coming from far-off places. They are also an environment-friendly means of transport.
