Six more districts in Bengal to become ODF
Six more districts of Bengal are soon going to earn the title of ‘Nirmal Zila’ – that is, they would become open-defecation free (ODF).
The six districts are Howrah, Paschim Medinipur, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Malda and Dakshin Dinajpur.
The eight existing ODF districts are Nadia, Hooghly, Purba Medinipur, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Cooch Behar.
According to the State Panchayats and Rural Development Department, in 2017-18, over 9 lakh individual household latrines (IHHLs) were constructed. By October 2019, 53 lakh more has been set as the target.
The State Government aims to make the whole state free of open defecation by October 2019, five years from the starting of the programme. Not just in homes, as part of Mission Nirmal Bangla, toilets are also constructed for the public at large in markets, bus stands, etc.
Mission Nirmal Bangla, adopted by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress Government in October 2014, is one of the most successful programmes in the country for implementing the construction of toilets, especially in rural areas, to stop open defecation. It has earned wide appreciation from international organisations like UNICEF and World Bank.
Nadia was the first district in India to be acknowledged as ODF by the Central Government.
নির্মল জেলার তকমা পাচ্ছে আরও ছয় জেলা
নির্মল বাংলা মিশনের পথে আরও এক বড় ধাপ এগোল রাজ্য সরকার। আরও ছটি জেলা নির্মল জেলা হিসেবে ঘোষিত হতে চলেছে। এই জেলাগুলি হল, হাওড়া, পশ্চিম মেদিনীপুর, বীরভূম, মুর্শিদাবাদ, মালদা ও দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর।
রাজ্য সরকারের লক্ষ্য ২০১৯ সালের অক্টোবর মাসের মধ্যে রাজ্যের সব জেলাকে নির্মল জেলা হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা। এর আগে আরও সাতটি জেলা নির্মল জেলার তকমা পেয়েছে। সেই জেলাগুলি হল, নদীয়া, হুগলী, পূর্ব মেদিনীপুর, পশ্চিম বর্ধমান, পূর্ব বর্ধমান, উত্তর ও দক্ষিণ ২৪ পরগনা।
পঞ্চায়েত দপ্তরের তথ্য অনুযায়ী, ২০১৭-১৮ সালে ৯ লক্ষেরও বেশি শৌচাগার নির্মিত হয়েছে। ২০১৯ সালের অক্টোবরের মধ্যে ৫৩ লক্ষ শৌচাগার নির্মাণের লক্ষ্য রাজ্যের।
