Road accidents down by 22% in 2 years
With the state-wide Safe Drive Save Life campaign launched by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bengal has witnessed a 22 per cent reduction in road accidents in the first quarter of 2018, compared to the corresponding period in 2016. Fatalities due to road accidents have also gone down by 18 per cent in the same time period.
The state police have prepared a comparative study on the number of road accidents that took place in the past three years in the areas under the jurisdiction of West Bengal Police. With the completion of the study by March-end, the police have come to know that the first three months of 2018 have recorded the least number of road accidents in the past three years.
Accidents in the first quarter of 2018 were 15.5 per cent less than in the corresponding period in 2017. The police have also compared the figure of 2018 with that of the same period in 2016, before the Safe Drive Save Life campaign was launched and it has revealed that there has been a drop in the rate of accidents by 22 per cent.
Comparison of the figures for road accident fatalities have revealed that there has been a 12 per cent drop in fatal accidents in the first three months of 2018, compared to the corresponding period in 2017. In March 2018, compared to March 2017, the number of fatalities has gone down by 20 per cent.

মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের পথ নিরাপত্তার জন্যে সেফ ড্রাইভ সেভ লাইফ কর্মসূচীতে ২০১৮ সালের প্রথম ত্রৈমাসিকে ২০১৬ সালের প্রথম ত্রৈমাসিকের তুলনায় নিরিখে গত ২ বছরে ২২ শতাংশ পথ দুর্ঘটনা কমেছে রাজ্যে।
পথ দুর্ঘটনার মাধ্যমে মৃতের শতাংশও কমেছে ১৮ শতাংশ। রাজ্য পুলিশ একটি তুলনামূলক খতিয়ানও তৈরী করেছে গত তিন বছরের। এবছরের প্রথম তিন বছরে গত দুই বছরের প্রথম ত্রৈমাসিকের তুলনায় পথ দুর্ঘটনা হয়েছে সব থেকে কম।
গত বছরের একই সময়ের নিরিখে এ বছরের জানুয়ারি থেকে মার্চ ২০১৮তে পথ দুর্ঘটনা কমেছে ১৫.৫ শতাংশ ও পথ দুর্ঘটনার ফলে মৃতের সংখ্যা কমেছে ১২ শতাংশ।
মুখ্যমন্ত্রী এই কর্মসূচী শুরু করার পর থেকে পথ নিরাপত্তা একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ হয়েছে পুলিশ কর্মীদের।
শুধু মার্চ মাসের পরিসংখ্যান ধরলে, গত বছর মার্চের নিরিখে পথ দুর্ঘটনায় মৃতের সংখ্যা কমেছে ২০ শতাংশ।
