Muslin to become a game-changer for textile export sector of Bangla

The West Bengal Khadi and Village Industries Board (WBKVIB) is confident on muslin khadi becoming a major component of the textile export sector of the State. It is sure of the fact that manufacturing of muslin garments will become a game-changer in the next five to ten years.

This would of course benefit the local economy and also make popular once again this age-old handicraft, something for which the whole of Bangla (including Bangladesh) was once famous.

A Muslin Tourism Circuit is being developed especially for foreign tourists and to promote the export of muslin, to reach the garment manufacturers of USA, the UK, Japan, Australia, Germany, Italy and others.

Another aspect of the export strategy is the tie-up that the board has done with global e-commerce giants. This is helping garments of the State to reach places all over the globe.

With respect to the domestic market, he said that the WBKVIB has tied up with a retail giant for new outlet corners in its stores. Free-size muslin dress materials have been introduced in shopping malls in Kolkata and its suburbs.

Then, WBKVIB has opened showrooms at various places, with an exclusive khadi muslin showroom on Park Street, Kolkata, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on August 19 during the State MSME Conclave.

Not just khadi, the WBKVIB is steadily capturing foreign markets with other products too. Baluchari sarees of Bishnupur, for example, have bagged markets in France and Greece.
