Investments pour in for road and port sector in Bengal

Union Minister for shipping, road transport and highways today called on West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna. They addressed a joint press conference where announcements of massive investments in ports and roads sector in West Bengal were made.

WB CM said that the state government would provide whatever support was required and extend full cooperation. “Politics is politics and development is development”, she said.

Investments pour in

The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) along with the state government would construct a port in the Sagar Islands at an investment of Rs 12,000 crore. There is also a need to construct a bridge or an underground tunnel for this purpose in addition to a railway line, and a consultant will be appointed for this.

Additional investments of Rs 3350 crore in the port sector like floating storages, dry bulk cargo handling terminal among others has also been sanctioned.

The Union Minister said that WB CM had assured of full cooperation from the state government side and these investments would boost the economy of the state.

Rs 6000 crore have been sanctioned for the roads sector in the state.
The Chief Minister also invited the Union Minister to attend the Bengal Global Summit to be held in Kolkata from 6-8 January, 2015.
