The state transport department has taken up an initiative to introduce intelligent transport system (ITS) to enable passengers to find out the whereabouts of the buses they are looking for with the help of a cellphone app.
Real time information
Transport department officials sitting in their office will also be able to find out the exact location of each bus with the help of a computer after the system is implemented. With the help of the ITS, if a vehicle develops a snag enroute, it will automatically send a message to the department seeking assistance.
The system will be introduced in the newly procured fleet operated by the Calcutta State Transport Corporation that were bought under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme (JnNURM). The CSTC has floated a tender to select a consultancy agency for proper implementation of the ITS.
Intelligent Transport System
Under the ITS, the state transport department will initially implement three facilities – automatic vehicle location, passenger information system and electronic ticketing machine.
With the automatic vehicle location system, passengers, through cell phone apps will be able to find out the exact location of buses, availability of buses of their chosen routes and arrival time.
Passengers on board will be informed in three languages – Bengali, Hindi and English – the present location of the buses and next stoppage.
A smart card system is also to be introduced through which passengers can pay their fares through electronic ticketing machines that would be given to conductors for fare collection.
