Home for senior citizens, Snehodiya inaugurated

The State Government’s home for senior citizens, Snehodiya was inaugurated yesterday. The fully air-conditioned eleven-storey living space is located in New Town, and is the first-of-its-kind venture by any Bangla Government agency
Snehodiya was announced in August last year, and the project has been overseen by the West Bengal Housing & Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO). Just opposite Snehodiya is located another space for the elderly, a senior citizens’ park called Swapno Bhor, which is another HIDCO venture.
By retaining the fundamental Bengali essence of rooms built around a courtyard, Snehodiya re-interprets the nostalgia of residents in a modern high-rise design.
There are 57 double bedroom suites and 90 single bedroom suites. Each suite is air-conditioned and furnished, and includes a television with cable connection. There is also a guest house within the building with six rooms.
Since this is a residence for the elderly, there is a medical unit in the building, located on the ground floor. Attendants in each floor and nurses attached to the ground floor medical unit are available as required. Professional housekeeping including laundry machine services are available as well.
There is also an activity centre designed to offer space for teaching classes by residents who opt to do so for children from economically weaker families (EWS families).
A general purpose stationery shop near the gate of Snehodiya was opened recently. An SBI ATM and a medicine shop will be opened shortly.
It has been decided that 75 per cent of the price paid on entry will be refunded to the occupants or their heirs in case of vacancy.
