Enough is enough: Mamata Banerjee on heckling of AITC delegation at Silchar
Today, a delegation from the Trinamool Congress was roughed up at the Silchar Airport, whence they had arrived on their way to places in Assam to talk to people removed from the National Registered of Citizens (NRC), which list was published recently, and take proper stock of the situation.
The delegation comprised eight people: four Lok Sabha MPs – Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Ratna De Nag, Mamatabala Thakur, Arpita GHosh; two Rajya Sabha MPs – Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Nadimul Haque; Bengal Cabinet Minister, Firhad Hakim, and MLA Mahua Moitra.
Trinamool protested against this incident in Rajya Sabha, leading to adjournment of the House. The issue was raised in Lok Sabha also.
Party Chairperson Mamata Banerjee spoke out strongly against the heckling at Silchar airport.
Her statement at Kolkata Airport:
I had already got the news while boarding the flight in Delhi that our representatives have been manhandled in Silchar, on the order of the Assam Government.
I have one question: when Home Minister Rajnath Singh had assured me, when I had gone to meet him, that nobody would be harassed, then why were they beaten up inside the airport? Even the female members were not spared.
If everything is ok, why is this happening? Why are they blaming us? Is it vendetta, in order to suppress the real facts? The people of Assam have become panicky. The BJP Government is simply showing its muscle power, as with a super-emergency Government.
This is most unfortunate. I condemn this attitude of the rulers. Our MPs had gone there only to meet the common people, and for nothing else. There was to be no public meeting. They had gone to meet some of the people at a convention hall.
The publication of the NRC has affected 40 lakh people. If the situation is so normal, why has Section 144 been imposed and even eight people not allowed to leave the airport?
Enough is enough. The BJP Government has now been exposed. It is aprt of their political vendetta to throw people out of India.
Don’t tell me about law. I know the law very well.
During the incident in Asansol, when communal riots took place after three people were killed by goons, Section 144 was imposed. But they did not adhere to the law and visited the place. But we did not stop them. This is the difference between us and them.
In Assam, they stopped a delegation of just eight people and they did not even spare women. They are even misinforming the media and trying to control the media.
This is the beginning of the end. They are politically tense and politically depressed, and that is why they are resorting to muscle power. Muscle power is not for the country. Our country runs on democratic power.
If they try to impose NRC here, as demanded by some of them, I’ll never allow that. The ones demanding such a thing are simply a bunch of hooligans.
