Division of responsibilities – roads under KMC, flyovers under KMDA

To better coordinate efforts and manpower, a proposal would be sent to the State Government to designate Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for maintenance of all city roads and Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) for maintenance of all city bridges and flyovers.
It would help as the mayor of Kolkata, in charge of KMC and the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister, in charge of KMDA, are one and the same.
The proposal will also contain the appeal to designate the State Public Works Department (PWD) to carry out maintenance of bridges and flyovers in the districts.
This division of responsibilities will enable work to be done quickly and in a smoother way. However, KMC or KMDA will collect maintenance charge from the respective agencies which own different roads or flyovers.
Currently, apart from the KMC, there are roads in Kolkata that are maintained by the PWD, State Irrigation Department, KMDA, Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC) and the Kolkata Port Trust (in a part of the port area).
