Chief Minister inaugurates 17th Jatra Utsav, announces pension for `Jatra` veterans
West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee on Friday inaugurated the 17th Jatra Utsav at the Kachari Maidan in Barasat.
Speaking on this occasion the Chief Minister expressed her happiness for getting the opportunity to be able to honour the veterans from the Jatra fraternity like Makhanlal Natto and Bela Debi. `I will watch Jatra today with you all. Honestly, I did not get much opportunity to watch `Jatra`, excepting on rare occasion during my visits to villages. I am aware of the popularity and the reach the Jatra has among the people. We are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to felicitate the Jatra veterans like Makhanlal Notto and Bela Debi`, said the Chief Minister.
`I know the world is moving at fast pace with the modernization being the `key` word but I firmly believe that by getting modern, it does not mean to abandon or disrespect our old tradition and heritage like Jatra, she added.
Bengal Chief Minister also announced a pension scheme for the veteran Jatra personalities on this occasion.
