Bengal Govt’s Career Paramarsh Kendras helping out SC and ST students
The Bengal Government has set up, till date, 30 career counselling centres, called Career Paramarsh Kendras (CPK), for providing assistance to the scheduled caste (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST) students and unemployed youths.
The centres are being overseen by the West Bengal SC, ST & OBC Development and Finance Corporation, under the Backward Classes Welfare Department. Eleven CPKs have been set up in north Bengal while the remaining 19 have been set up in south Bengal.
The scheme was adopted at the first meeting of the West Bengal Scheduled Caste Advisory Council, chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She took the initiative of setting up the centres with a view to making youths belonging to SC and ST categories self-reliant.
In the second phase, another 37 CPKs will be established. Once all the CPKs come up, there will one centre in each subdivision.
These centres give information on organisations, industries, business houses and sectors having potential for jobs or providing self-employment opportunities. They have the database on the Government schemes for self-employment and financing tie-ups.
In the current financial year, the CPKs aim to counsel at least 3,000 visitors and facilitate at least 500 candidates with finding suitable self-employment. The centres will also organise job fairs and placement services.
Self-employment opportunities will be looked to be provided in sectors like agriculture, horticulture, pisciculture, animal resources development, and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), in the localities of the candidates being advised.
The centres are also providing 300 hours of training to 150 selected candidates, at least 100 of whom will be provided with jobs.
