Bengal Govt to train 6 lakh youths under Utkarsh Bangla
During the current fiscal, that is, 2018-19, the State Government will train 6 lakh youths under Utkarsh Bangla. This was announced recently by the Technical Education & Training and Skill Development Minister at a programme organised in Kolkata by a chamber of commerce.
The youths would undergo training in both institutional and non-instructional modes. So far training has been supply-driven. Now the Government has decided to make a paradigm shift to make the training demand-driven, and for that more interactions with industries and chambers of commerce would be carried out.
Utkarsh Bangla is an umbrella scheme for all skill development programmes in Bengal. It was launched in February 2016 by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with the aim of providing vocational training to school dropouts. The scheme is implemented by Paschim Banga Society for Skill Development (PBSSD).
According to the minister, his department supervises 250 ITIs, 152 polytechnics, and 2,714 vocational training centres, and that the intake capacities for them had gone up to 71,379, 38,045, and 1.52 lakh (8+ level and 10+2 level combined), respectively.
