Bangla Govt strengthening tourism facilitators in Murshidabad, Malda

The Bangla Government has taken up steps to further improve the tourism economy in the districts of Murshidabad and Malda.

The State Tourism Department is upgrading the existing tourist lodges to three-star category holiday homes at the historical sites in the two districts.

Waterways are going to play an important role in the department’s new plans. All tourist places which can be connected would be connected through waterways. In Murshidabad, houseboats will be introduced.

Tourism-related skill development programmes would also be started in various districts. Various degree and diploma courses on tourism are also on the anvil.

The department is already developing a tourism circuit covering historical places in the two districts (Hazar Duari, Lal Bagh and Motijheel in Murshidabad, and Adina Mosque and Buddhist Stupa in Malda) as well as Plassey in Nadia district. Plassey is where the British won a decisive battle in 1757, defeating the forces led by Siraj-ud-Daulah, who had his palace in Murshidabad.

There has been a more than eight times increase in the Plan Budget of the Tourism Department, from Rs 40 crore in financial year (FY) 2010-11 to Rs 336 crore in FY 2017-18.
