Bangla Govt to open 2,631 customer service points for unbanked villages

To bring the far-flung villages of Bangla into the banking network, the State Government has decided to empower cooperatives in such villages to act as banks. These ‘banks’, which the government has decided to name as customer service points (CSP) would be under the State Cooperation Department, and not the Reserve Bank of India. Lakhs and lakhs of people would be benefitted as a result.
According to senior government officials, a decision has been taken to open 2,631 CSPs for now, for which purpose the Cooperation Department has allocated Rs 1,000 crore.
Work on the project has already started. About 2,000 cooperative societies have been identified for the purpose.
All the basic services provided by banks would be available at the CSP. Gradually, ATM services too would be provided by the CSPs. The State Government has planned to open the majority of the CSPs during the current financial year, that is, 2018-19.
