Bangla Govt to develop infrastructure of traditional wooden furniture clusters
The State Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Department has decided to create necessary infrastructure for 30 traditional wooden furniture clusters that have been identified across Bengal.
In many districts, according to an official of the department, traditional wooden furniture-making is a generational business and many people earn a livelihood out of this. The Government wants development and sustenance of the trade that can witness a huge turnover annually. The Government’s initiative will also help in improving the economy of the places where the clusters exist.
The districts where clusters have been identified include Jalpaiguri, Howrah, Alipurduar, Paschim Medinipur, Purulia, Uttar Dinajpur, Birbhum and Bankura.
As part of the State Government’s initiative, skill development programmes would be organised for the carpenters. Hence, they will be able to pick up new techniques and produce furniture as per the demand of the present times. This will help them compete in the national and international market.
In the clusters, Common Facility Centres will be developed. Testing laboratories and units for mechanised processing of tools will be set up too.
Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV) will be working to identify the need of each of the clusters and will also execute the development work subsequently. Members of the SPVs have already started speaking to the people who own units in the clusters, to know their requirements.
