Bangla CM hoists the national flag on the occasion of Independence Day

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today celebrated the 73rd Independence Day of our country. She hoisted the national flag at a programme on Red Road. In her speech, among other things, she said that democracy is the country’s biggest asset. She also asked the people to take a vow to never to divide the country.
Eight police personnel were awarded medals, among whom were Sanjay Singh (ADG, South Bengal), Vineet Goyal (Director-Security, West Bengal), Manoj Verma (CP, Barrackpore), Santosh Pandey (DC, Traffic, West Bengal), C Sudhakar (SSP (Coordination), North 24 Parganas), Meraj Khalid (DCP, South Division, Kolkata) and Shyam Singh (SP, Birbhum).
Following the medal ceremony, the march past by the police started. The overall theme this time was ‘Moder Gorbo Bangla’ (Our Pride Bangla).
After the march past, colourful tableaus highlighting various schemes of the State Government, social awareness-related messages, water conservation and environmental pollution went in procession.
The schemes and topics highlighted were Jal Dharo Jal Bharo, Kanyashree, Safe Drive Save Life, Don’t Waste Water, Environmental Conservation, Self-sufficiency, Khadya Sathi, Sabooj Sathi, as well as themes based on sports (Youth and Sports Department) and culture (Information and Culture Department). Students from various schools also participated in cultural programmes.
The chief minister tweeted, “I salute my nation and all our countrymen and women on Independence Day. We must always strive for political freedom, economic freedom, freedom of expression, & preserve democratic rights. When these are not given, we should organise peaceful movements to preserve these rights. Democracy is our most priceless asset. Let us take an oath today, not to divide India. We must unite India. Irrespective of caste or creed, we are all one India. Secularism is what identifies and unites us as a nation.”
