Bangla CM asks Irrigation Dept to prepare database of all dams in State

On the direction of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the State Irrigation & Waterways Department is preparing a database of all the major and minor dams under its jurisdiction. The audit map will contain relevant details of all the dams and water reservoirs.

According to experts, this is a proactive step to avoid any flood-like situation in the State, as certain moves would be taken up as per the findings of the audit map. The database will help determine, if required because of heavy rainfall, how much water to release and when.

At present there are 23 dams and water reservoirs under the jurisdiction of the Bangla Government, and around 900 check dams. The number of the latter has gone up considerably in recent years, helping in checking flood-like situations at various places.

With the completion of the audit mapping of all the dams and water reservoirs, there will be a ready database available with the State Government and the concerned officials.
