Banga Janani Vahini organises sit-in protest against Meghalaya governor’s comments

Banga Janani Vahini today held a sit-in protest at Hazra More in Kolkata to raise voices against the indecent comments on women from Bangla made by the governor of Meghalaya a few days back. The protest started at 1 PM. It is through this protest, and amidst the blowing of conch shells and ululations, that Banga Janani Vahini began its momentous journey.
It may be mentioned that Trinamool Chairperson Mamata Banerjee had announced the formation of Banga Janani Vahini in Naihati, at the protest meeting held by the families rendered homeless because of the post-poll violence by BJP there. The Chairperson of Banga Janani Vahini is Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.
Communalism, religious fanaticism, violence and disrespect to women have reached their peak during the rule of the BJP, with the avowed participation of the RSS. Women of Bangla, through the blowing of conch shells, announced the start of their protest against these today, which are threatening to change forever for the worse the very idea of India.
Several top female leaders of Trinamool addressed the gathering. Lok Sabha MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said, “Women do not get the respect they deserve in BJP’s regime. The BJP is indulging in politics of communal polarisation. The Prime Minister is ‘non-resident’ Prime Minister, who does not care about the aspirations of common people. Most of the BJP leaders are involved in illegal activities. We will not allow Bengal to become another Gujarat.”
“There is a fundamental flaw in BJP’s ideology. They will never be able to respect women. They always try to divide people and have a condescending attitude towards the women,” said the state minister for women and child development Dr Shashi Panja.
“A woman has the right to choose any profession of her choice. Those who launch vulgar attacks on a woman’s right to choose a profession lack education in the real sense of the term, though they may be academically qualified. This is the real character of the BJP. A governor cannot represent any political party. However, time and again the governor of Meghalaya has made comments of similar lines,” said another State minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
Another Lok Sabha MP Pratima Mondal said, “With his comments, the person holding a constitutional position has insulted women, Bangla Ma as well as Bharat Mata. Is he still capable of holding a constitutional post? Few weeks ago even the statue of Vidyasagar was vandalised. The BJP is spreading the seeds of communal polarisation.”
