10,000 e-rickshaws for rural areas

To enable employment generation, the State Government has decided to give 10,000 e-rickshaws to rural youths. Thirty per cent of the cost of a vehicle would be borne by the government, with the rest to be given by the owner.

This project is the initiative of the State Self-Help and Self-Employment Department, as part of the Swami Vivekananda Swanirbhar Karmasansthan Prakalpa.

Under the scheme, meant for unemployed youths from the scheduled caste and minority communities, and for women, 30 per cent subsidy, up to a maximum Rs 1.5 lakh for individuals and Rs 3.5 lakh for groups (self-help groups, etc.), is given for starting a new venture.

It is under this provision of the scheme that the e-rickshaw project has been launched. The department has held meetings with various e-rickshaw manufacturers to ensure that there is no problem with the supply.

Though 10,000 e-rickshaws would be arranged initially, the project would be expanded in the future.
