8.3 lakh houses for the rural poor
The State Government is building 8.36 lakh houses for poor people living in rural areas under the scheme Banglar Bari. The houses are being built by the Panchayats and Rural Development Department.
Of the total number, 5.86 lakh were built in the last financial year, while the rest 2.5 lakh would be completed in the current financial year.
The scheme was started about two years back as a project for the urban poor, and has since been extended to the rural poor. The pilot project for the scheme was completed in May 2017.
The area of each house is 25 sq metres, comprising one room, a kitchen, a balcony and a toilet. The toilets are being constructed under Mission Nirmal Bangla.
Every house will bear the tag ‘Banglar Bari’. The beneficiaries can decorate the houses on their own.
It has been decided that in Jangalmahal, the beneficiaries will get Rs 1.30 lakh while their counterparts in other districts will get Rs 1.20 lakh.
Stress has been given on eight districts – South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Howrah, Hooghly, Murshidabad and Purba Bardhaman.
A similar project for the urban poor has also been taken up. Around 8 lakh people living in 115 municipality areas, including in Kolkata, will benefit under it. Approximately Rs 3.75 lakh will be allotted for constructing each house.
