Mamata Banerjee inaugurates several projects related to small-scale industries
Several new projects of the State Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises and Textiles Department were inaugurated in the last few days. On March 6, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated several new projects related to textiles and handicrafts, while on March 7, the Cabinet meeting finalised 37 land allotments.
The chief minister inaugurated one skill centre and 14 production centres, spread across eight districts, dedicated to traditional handloom and handicraft items as well as on vermicompost, used to enhance the quality of soil.
These have been set up under seven projects of the State Government. The projects are Project Sal and Sabai (one skill centre), Project Muslin (9 production centres), Project Madurkathi (one production centre), Project Vermicompost (one production centre), Project Hand Gloves (one production centre), Project Bansh (bamboo) and Project Khesh (one production centre).
She also inaugurated a regional export promotion centre dedicated to tant (traditional cotton handloom) in Shantipur (Nadia district), traditionally associated with the product, and a Karmatirtha in Ramnagar-2 block (Purba Medinipur district).
The next day, March 7, saw the State Cabinet approve allotment of land to as many as 37 people involved in the production of various handicraft items and spare parts at Biswa Khudra Bazar, located in Bolpur in Birbhum district.
The state-of-the-art Biswa Khudra Bazar, a dream project of the chief minister, is a project being developed by the West Bengal Small Industries Development Corporation (WBSIDC) as an integrated production and promotion hub dedicated to micro and small enterprises.
The new manufacturing units would lead to the employment of 5,000 people. The WBSIDC will hold 11 per cent share in these manufacturing units.
The units will make kantha stitch and terracotta products, ornamental jewellery, poly-printed packaging materials, spare parts for the power sector, incense sticks, cosmetics, steel utensils, etc.
