UK lauds Bengal`s Kanyashree scheme

The `Kanyashree` scheme launched by Ms. MamataBanerjee led West Bengal government to provide incentives for the girl childhas earned recognition from United Kingdom, the state minister for womendevelopment and social welfare Dr Sashi Panja told the Assembly on Monday.

Replying after the debate on herdepartments` budgets, Dr Panja said the scheme had been asked to be presentedas a case study at the forthcoming Girl Summit in London on 22 July.

The scheme envisaged that if a girlcontinued her studies up to the age of 18 years, a one-time grant of Rs 25,000would be deposited in her bank account provided she remains unmarried.

The government would also provide an annualscholarship of Rs 500 to girls between 13 and 18 years (class VIII to classXII) to continue their studies, provided they were unmarried and their parents`annual income was below Rs 1.20 lakh, she said.

For better functioning of the homes wheredestitute and under-privileged women and girls were given shelter, thegovernment had installed CCTV cameras and the staff were being trained formonitoring of the panels.
