Bangla CM proposes internships for college passouts to balance teacher shortage

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today chaired a review meeting on education sector today. The meeting was attended by vice-chancellors of 30 universities. Principals of several colleges were also present. After the meeting, the CM said that it was a productive discussion.
The CM said that there are many areas where there are many teachers. On the other hand, there are areas where the number of teachers is less. There is a need to maintain balance.
To meet this challenge, she proposed that Class V be moved to primary level. Since there are many teachers at primary level, this move will mitigate the problem to an extent.
For areas, like Sundarbans, Jangalmahal or Dooars, the CM proposed appointing college passouts as interns to solve the issue of availability of teachers. They will get a certificate. Based on performance, they will also get priority during teachers’ recruitment.
“The interns will be given an honourarium of Rs 2,000 (for primary level schools) and Rs 2,500 (for secondary level schools),” the CM announced, adding that finer details of this proposal would need to be worked out.
