State Govt agency NKDA to adorn metro rail pillars with ‘vertical gardens’

The Newtown Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has chalked out a unique plan of setting up vertical gardens on the pillars supporting metro railway tracks, as part of the State Government’s ‘Save Green and Stay Clean’ project.
Flower pots will be put up to create the vertical gardens. The NKDA has done a pilot project by adorning the pillars of the Airport-Garia Metro railway route with flower pots. Following a positive feedback, a plan has been undertaken to create such gardens across the metro routes, wherever possible.
It has often been found that the naked metro pillars are aesthetically poor and do not go with the soothing ambiance of Newtown. According to environmentalists, such gardens in cities play important roles in keeping the temperature and dust under control, and in maintaining the environmental balance.
The decision will also give added value to the projects being taken up to increase the green cover in New Town.
The NKDA has taken several measures to make Newtown a green city. Nurseries to grow tall trees have come up and those who will maintain trees will be rewarded in a bid to encourage the residents.
