Floating solar plants to come up in Bangla

In a first for India, the Bangla Government has decided to set up floating solar power plants at irrigation reservoirs across the State. For this, the Power Department is taking the help of the Irrigation Department to create a list of waterbodies where such projects could be set up.

Three plants have already been decided upon, according to the Power Minister – two 5 megawatt (MW) projects in Sagardighi in Murshidabad district and Bakreshwar in Birbhum district, and a 100MW project at Mukutmanipur in Bankura district.

The first to be commissioned, within the next six months, is the one in Sagardighi at a cost of Rs 28 crore, for which a detailed project report has already been prepared. All the three are expected to come up within the next one year.

The West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL) is the implementing agency of the project.
