Bangla Govt to plant new arboretum for mangrove species of the Sundarbans
The State Forest department is coming up with a new arboretum for showcasing the wide variety of mangrove plants that exist in the Sundarbans. An arboretum is a botanical garden devoted to trees.
The arboretum will come up adjacent to Sudhanyakhali Watch Tower, which is deemed as a prime location for the spotting of wildlife.
There are around 54 species of mangrove shrubs and trees, among which 34 species are found in the Sundarbans. No other mangrove forest in the country has such a variety.
The Government feels that tourists who visit the Sundarbans will be interested in gaining knowledge about this huge mangrove variety, and hence the setting up of the arboretum. Sundarban Biosphere Reserve will take the help of the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) for the purpose of labelling the species of mangroves.
The State Forest Department also has plans to develop its existing arboretum in Bakkhali to make it more interesting for tourists.
