India first: Female correctional home inmates in Bengal to make sanitary napkins
For the first time in India, inmates of a correctional home are going to make sanitary napkins. This unique project is happening at the Bardhaman Central Correctional Home in Bengal, involving its female inmates.
Two primary issues are being addressed through the project: first, removing any sense of unease among the inmates regarding use of sanitary napkins, because the inmates themselves would be manufacturing, and second, improving the hygiene of the inmates through usage of the napkins.
To begin with, 15 female inmates would be trained, to be followed by 10 more. Space and machinery have been provided inside the premises of the home.
Full-fledged manufacturing of sanitary napkins would commence after completion of training. According to the home officials, 2,500 napkins can be manufactured per day. If the project is successful, it would be replicated in other correctional homes of the State.
The inmates involved will get labour charges. The napkins would also be bought by the Home authorities for the inmates. They would be available at a price much lower than those available in the market.
Inmates of correctional homes in Bengal are already making a wide range of goods, from farming implements and handicraft items to saris and edibles, which are sold both at shops inside the premises for the inmates as well as outside. Additionally, over the last few years, inmates of some homes have been performing theatrical and other cultural programmes regularly.
To accomplish all this, the inmates are being trained by some of the best people in various fields. Such efforts not only bring out the talent that the inmates have, and show to the world what prisoners too are capable of, but also help to detox their minds and help them to reintegrate into society after their release by opening up opportunities for earning.

এবার বাংলার সংশোধনাগারের বন্দিনীরাই তৈরি করবেন স্যানিটারি ন্যাপকিন
কারাগারের অন্দরে এ বার তৈরি হবে ন্যাপকিন এবং তা তৈরি করবেন বন্দিনীরাই।অভিনব এই উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে বর্ধমান কেন্দ্রীয় সংশোধনাগার। বাংলা তো বটেই, সারা দেশে এই প্রথম জেলের বন্দিনীদের হাতে তৈরি হচ্ছে স্যানিটারি ন্যাপকিন।
কারা দফতর সূত্রের খবর, প্রথমে ১৫ জন বন্দিনীকে ন্যাপকিন তৈরির প্রশিক্ষণ দেবে একটি স্বেচ্ছাসেবী সংস্থা। পরে আরও ১০ জনকে ওই প্রশিক্ষণ দেওয়া হবে। জেলেই একটি ছোট জায়গায় উৎপাদন কেন্দ্র তৈরি হয়েছে। সেখানে বসানো হয়েছে ন্যাপকিন তৈরির যন্ত্রপাতি। সেখানেই বন্দিনীদের ওই প্রশিক্ষণ দেওয়া হবে। প্রশিক্ষণ শেষ হওয়ার পরে পুরোদস্তুর ন্যাপকিন উৎপাদন শুরু হবে বর্ধমান জেলে।
দিনে ২৫০০টি ন্যাপকিন তৈরি করবেন বন্দিনীরা। এই প্রাথমিক প্রকল্প সফল হলে এটি অন্যান্য কেন্দ্রীয় সংশোধনাগারেও তা চালু করার পরিকল্পনা আছে কারা দফতরের।
