Outstanding praise from UNICEF for Kanyashree

The West Bengal Government’s landmark Kanyashree Scheme came in for outstanding praise from UNICEF’s chief field officer for West Bengal, Mr Mohammad Asadur Rahman on the occasion of Child Rights Week.

According to Mr Rahman, the Kanyashree Scheme created a lot of buzz at the recently-held United Nations convention in London. Data presented by Mr Rahman at the press conference showed that as a result of the scheme, the number of girl students willing to continue their studies beyond the 10th standard, till the 12th, has increased by 6%, which is significant. He felt that the more schemes like Kanyashree become popular, the more would the state of education in West Bengal improve.

The chairman of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR),  informed that Child Rights Week is being celebrated from November 20 to 26, as an extension of International Child Rights Day on November 20. The celebrations are being organised by the Department of Women and Child Development.

More than 25 lakh girls are now under the Kanyashree scheme in the State. The project was started 2012 on the initiative of the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
