WB Govt to use Jatra to build consumer awareness

To protect the common people from frauds and make aware of their rights, the state Consumer Affairs department will now take help of Jatras. The age-old traditional entertainment form is widely practiced and is very popular in rural Bengal.

State Consumer Affairs Minister, Mr Sadhan Pandey informed that there will be around eighty such Jatras in the pick season of winter around Bengal and the Consumer Affairs department will hold campaigns in the beginning of each performance.

The state Consumer Affairs department organised awareness programmes through camps, seminars-cum-group discussion, workshops, Tableau (Mobile display van), street dramas, magic shows, talking doll shows and regular awareness programmes with Self Help Groups, Clubs & Associations.  Leaflets and booklets have been published in Bengali, Hindi, English and Urdu languages containing basic information on consumer awareness.

The department participated in different fairs throughout West Bengal at the winter season, like the Poush Mela in Birbhum, Raas Mela in Coochbehar, Jalpesh Mela in Jalpaiguri, Gangasagar Mela and Sunderban Yuva Utsab in South 24 Parganas.

Live phone in programmes are aired via Doordarshan Kendra (D.D. Bangla) Kolkata on consumer awareness titled “Kena Katar Sat Satero“, every Friday from 8.30 PM to 9.00 PM.
