Stop joint ops in Jangalmahal, insists Mamata

At a news conference in Kolkata on Tuesday, Trinamool chief Ms. Mamata Banerjee gave vent to her ire. “The Union home minister and the West Bengal governor have admitted that there are armed camps of CPM cadres in Lalgarh. For what reason has no step still been taken to remove these camps?” she wondered. “We have informed the Prime Minister; Pranab Mukherjee has been told several times. We are not begging for help. In Singur and Nandigram, we did not get help from anyone. In Lalgarh, too, we will fight CPM’s terror on our own.” As railway minister, Ms. Banerjee has been at the receiving end of Maoist depredations. Train schedules are frequently disrupted because of Maoist activities. The Trinamool chief’s prescription is that the Central forces undertake the operations against Maoists on their own. “I have no objection to that, as we are against killings,” she said. Ms. Banerjee is also aware of the constitutional provision that law and order is a state subject and Central forces extending help to the state government must function under the state police. “It is sad that CPM is misusing constitutional provisions for political reasons,” she said.
