Prez rule a necessity, but let people throw out CPM: Mamata

Before leaving for New Delhi on Sunday afternoon, the Trinamool chief Ms. Mamata Banerjee said the situation in the state warranted President’s rule. She, however, added that the people would “dismiss the Left Front governmentâ€. Ms. Banerjee is likely to meet Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday. She has repeatedly sought Centre’s intervention on the issue of central forces in the three Maoist-infested districts of West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura. The meeting with Mukherjee is to discuss the modalities of the amendments proposed in the land acquisition act. Ms. Banerjee has demanded that a fresh act be drafted. She is also likely to raise the law and order issue with the senior minister. “They came to power in Tripura with President’s rule. In West Bengal, too, the same thing happened. The law and order situation in the state is so bad that President’s rule can be introduced here any day. The Left Front government can be dismissed by the Centre. But we are not going to ask for it. People will sack them,†Banerjee said. “We believe in democracy, that is why we are tolerating them,†she said.
On Monday and Tuesday, Trinamool activists will hit the streets for a signature campaign against CPM’s misrule. On October 28, a human chain will be formed for peace. On November 13, Trinamool workers will march in Rajarhat against forceful acquisition. A maha-michhil will be held on December 15.
